BEAGLE BUGLE - ROCKWELL PTA AND SCHOOL NEWS

Awesome volunteer needed to serve as VP of Events!

Do you like  ICE CREAM?  How about  DANCING?  Learning about the  HERITAGE of other Rockwell families?  Being your child's  SUPERHERO

If you said "yes" to any of these questions, please consider a role on the PTA board as  VP of Events for the 2019-2020 school year.   The outgoing board finishes up their duties for the school year at the end of June.

If the role remains vacant, the PTA will have to cancel individual events as they approach until the role is filled.  High-level responsibilities can be found  here (near the bottom of the table in the middle of the page).  For detailed questions, contact our current VP of Events,  Elaine Bentzinger for questions.

schoolpoolSCHOOL POOL UPDATE

Bike to School Day has passed, but SchoolPool continues through the end of the month!

Help our school earn money by walking, biking, carpooling, or riding the bus to school, and logging your trips on the SchoolPool tracker.  Only one day of walking, biking, carpooling or riding the school bus is needed to count towards earning money for our school.

At the end of the month, submit a completed reward coupon with a legible email address for your student to receive a free round of Putt Putt golf at Rainbow Run in Redmond in addition to $5 given to our PTA for each tracker submitted!  This is free money for our kids  and will go directly to school enrichment programs like the STEM Science Fair, Classroom grants for the Toy Maker, School Musical and Science Van.

Let's all Walk and Roll Together!

ATTENTION 5TH GRADE PARENTS

Parents of fifth graders must be reminded that to enter the sixth grade, they must show proof of one dose of the Tdap vaccine (to help prevent pertussis/whooping cough).

The deadline to turn it in is June 1, 2019, unless your child has a summer birthday. Children with summer birthdays just need to have a completed form on file by the first day of school. If you have any questions, please contact your school nurse.

We appreciate your assistance! In appreciation for your help, you will be given passes for free admission to Pacific Science Center exhibits.

If you have any questions, please contact Mrs. Whitestone.

**Please remember, as with all Rockwell activities, you must be cleared by the district with a background check and be on the LWSD approved volunteer list to volunteer.

PARENT'S GUIDE TO SUCCESS

Parents' Guide to 5th grade Student Success
Wondering what your child is currently learning and what they need to know as they transition into the next grade?  PTA has featured one grade level every two weeks to ensure parents know and also offer a couple of ideas to support learning at home.

A Sample of What Your Child Will Be Working on in 5th Grade:
  • Identifying and judging evidence that supports particular ideas in an author's argument to change a reader's point of view
  • Integrating information from several print and digital sources to answer questions and solve problems
  • Writing opinions that offer reasoned arguments and provide facts and examples that are logically grouped to support the writer's point of view
  • Reporting on a topic or presenting an opinion with his or her own words, a logical sequence of ideas, sufficient facts and details, and formal English when appropriate
  • Generalizing the place-value system to include decimals, and calculating with decimals to the hundredths place (two places after the decimal)
  • Multiplying whole numbers quickly and accurately, for example 1,638 × 753, and dividing whole numbers in simple cases, such as dividing 6,971 by 63
  • Understanding the concept of volume, and solving word problems that involve volume
  • Graphing points in the coordinate plane (two dimensions) to solve problems
How to help your child at home:
  • Go to a play or musical with your child. Discuss the way the actors bring the words to life
  • Invite your child to read his or her writing out loud to other family members. Ask questions about your child's word choices and ideas.
  • Doing arithmetic with decimals, for example when balancing a checkbook.
  • Using the length, width, and depth of a garden plot to determine how many bags of garden soil to buy.

TRANSLATION SERVICES AVAILABLE VIA ROCKWELL PTA

Rockwell is a flourishing community of diversity. In order to maintain our inclusive community and assist families with emerging proficiency in English, PTA and Rockwell have established two programs to  facilitate two-way communication.

PTA provides translators through our FACE (Family and Community Engagement) committee at school events, meetings and by translating forms into several languages. You can also select your preferred language on our PTA website by using the "select language" button.

Rockwell utilizes a phone service to eliminate communication barriers- the service offers more than 240 spoken languages and American Sign LanguageStop by the office to find out more or use the service for meetings, registration or any other need.

REGISTER EARLY FOR KINDERGARTEN
Tell your neighbors & friends

If you live in Lake Washington School District (LWSD) and your child will be five years old on or before August 31, 2019, now is the time to register them for Kindergarten!

Registration takes place at your neighborhood school during regular school hours through the beginning of the 2019-20 school year.

While registration will continue throughout the school year and summer, parents are highly encouraged to register students as soon as possible. Doing so helps ensure class sizes are balanced and adequate staff are hired in time for the new school year.

Visit the  Kindergarten Information webpage  for more information.
