UNITY DAY
WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 19

Dear Rockwell Families,

This  Wednesday, October 19, is Unity Day. Unity Day started in 2011 and is recognized in schools across the country as a day when we call extra attention to ensuring we have a safe and welcoming community in our schools. Our students have all been participating in conversations about how we can create a school free from bullying and in which every student feels safe, welcome, and valued. Additionally, the students in our Anti-Bullying Group will be finding ways to ensure all kids are included at recess and all day long. Everyone is invited to wear orange  on Wednesday and show a united front. We hope you join us in wearing orange too!

Our students have also helped in the creation of a work of art involving every child at Rockwell -- a hand print mural which will hang at our front entrance and which will welcome every family to Rockwell in the 37+ languages spoken by families in our community. We would like to invite any of you who would like to add messages of peace and welcome in your home language to do so -- I have obtained translations in many languages, but I would love to get as many hands on this as we can, to truly embody the amazing community we have here at Rockwell.

If you are interested in participating, please email me at  [email protected]. Thank you, all, for everything you bring to our wonderful school, and for creating a community that welcomes and values learners from all parts of the world. I am so proud to be part of it.

Thank you,

Principal

SIGN UP FOR WEATHER UPDATES

Make sure your email and phone number are up to date and you check in when there is bad weather so you know all the latest information. You can read all the details on the district website--the place to go for morning updates as well.

Here is what it says about bad weather:

To ensure that all families know when school has been cancelled or delayed, Lake Washington School District will place a call to all parents via School Messenger beginning at 6 a.m. on those days. If you need to know whether school has been cancelled or delayed before you get a call, the information will also be available on this website (lwsd.org) or at flashalert.net or on many local television or radio stations. The calls are made early so that students at the high schools, which may begin class as early as 7:20, have enough time to get to school.

WALK TO SCHOOL MONTH:
OCTOBER

Tired of all the morning traffic getting to school? Frustrated about being backed up to the traffic circle and having to wait at intersections to drop your student off?  Why not try a different method to get to school?

Talk to your neighbors and set up a carpool or "walking bus". Walk your student to school in the morning...  it's a great way to spend a little time together and both get some exercise. If your student is old enough, dust off that helmet and let them ride their bike to school. All of these will save you from added morning stress, reduce traffic around Rockwell, and maybe even increase your daily exercise. You may even get to school faster than driving alone!

Continue marking your calendars this week .  Walking, riding a bike, taking the bus, and carpooling are all included. And, you do not have to mark your calendar daily to count... a few times this month is fine too!

Thank you all for participating!
