VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: SALMON IN THE CLASSROOM

"Salmon in the classroom" has been a tradition at Rockwell for over 20 years. Fourth grade uses the salmon for several aspects within the years' curriculum including demonstrating the connection between Northwest Coastal People and the economics unit which teaches about natural resources & jobs.  The salmon correlate to the Environments Life Science unit, human life cycle and provide hands on content to the novel study, research and writing project.

The next two months are a very important (and exciting) time to be at Rockwell! The salmon eggs are currently turning into alevins and will soon start to emerge from the gravel to become fry (what we recognize as salmon).  This is when you can see them in the water!

Fourth  grade teachers bring students to the tank to observe this amazing life cycle as it happens.  The best part for the students, is that they get to feed the fry!

As you can see, the salmon provide essential information for the fourth graders and now is the time to ask for volunteers to provide essential care to the salmon.

** Do you have 20-30 minutes at noon to supervise small groups of kids feed their fry?  We need 8-12 adult volunteers!  Training is provided.  The more volunteers, the less shifts you commit to.

Do you have a fish tank at home? Are you staying local for Spring Break?  We need you, too!

Thank you to those that have already offered to help...  we need more to help raise the salmon.
