It is hard to believe that we are already several weeks into our Breaking Chains sermon series. Last Sunday in worship Pastor Leo talked to us about our Money Mindset and we took a survey - here are the combined results from both services:
strapped in the present and anxious about the future (living paycheck to paycheck) - 11% of US Christians / 8% Bear Creek
Feeling okay, experiencing relative calm but hoping for more (not yet feeling secure- one disaster away from real hardship) - 32% of US Christians / 21% Bear Creek
Feeling mostly confident (feel they have enough for self, but not enough extra to share - tend to be as enslaved to saving as struggles are to debt) - 38% of US Christians / 31% Bear Creek
Feeling grateful and ready to share (believe they have more than enough and joyfully give away more than 10% of their income) - 13% of US Christians / 31% Bear Creek
It is nice to see that the percentage in the Surplus Mindset at 31% - more than double the general population of US Christians, according to the research from the book "Your New Money Mindset." However, the goal for Breaking Chains is for
of us to work toward, and eventually find, that elusive Surplus Mindset, or true Financial Peace. So, 69% of those responding during worship still have some challenges before they reach Financial Peace. Pastor Leo reminded us that it all starts with an attitude of gratitude for all the ways you have been blessed. According to the book's author, "It's a conscious choice to think and act differently about everything we own or might wish that we did. A surplus mindset means deciding we have enough for ourselves and enough to share."

One great way to work toward financial peace is to attend Financial Peace University (FPU) and learn about the
7 Baby Steps:
- Step 1: $1,000 in a starter emergency fund
- Step 2: Pay-off all Non-mortgage Debt using the Debt Snowball
- Step 3: 3-6 Months Expenses in a Fully Funded Emergency Fund
- Step 4: Invest 15% of Income into Roth IRAs and Pre-tax Retirement Plans
- Step 5: Fund your Children's College
- Step 6: Pay-off your Home Early
- Step 7: Build Wealth and Give
"The wise man saves for the future, but the foolish man spends whatever he gets." Proverbs 21:20 (TLB)
Our week three FPU lesson was on Baby Step 3 (setting aside 3-6 months of expenses in an emergency fund). Achieving this step can go a long way toward being able to feel truly secure and beginning to have a Surplus Mindset. The emergency fund protects you from going into debt to cover emergencies, and it keeps you from living in fear of the next surprise expense.
Completing Baby Step 3 is not just about saving, it is also about contentment - remember the attitude of gratitude Pastor Leo talked about? Gratitude will lead you to contentment which, in turn, starts you on the road to financial peace. "I am not saying this because I am in need, for I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances." Phillipians 4:11
Although we are now a third of the way through Breaking Chains and this 9-week session of FPU, we still have room for visitors in FPU classes, so feel free to pop in (see FPU class times and locations or call the church office) - everyone is welcome! Stay tuned to Pastor Leo's sermon series, engage in your small group discussions over the next six weeks, and pray for Breaking Chains to have a positive impact on many lives at Bear Creek and on how church leadership manages your gifts for Kingdom building.
