THANK YOU!

We want to say "Thank You" to everyone who donated to the two different food drives that we had last weekend. Your generous donations, organized by the United Methodist Women and MESA-Outreach resulted in $940 in donations to the MESA-Outreach Food Pantry and 431lbs of Peanut Butter, Jelly, and Tuna!

Thank you also to all our red apron volunteers who helped make this year's SouperBowl of Caring a big success!

Breaking Chains Update
What Happened This Week

The 7 Baby Steps we are studying in our FPU small groups right now are a surefire plan for developing a surplus mindset and true financial freedom. Our first three weeks covered the first three Baby Steps that should be done in order one at a time. Each step was covered in depth, the first three weeks:
  • Step 1: $1,000 in an emergency fund.
  • Step 2: Pay off all Non-mortgage Debt with the Debt Snowball
  • Step 3: 3-6 Months Expenses in an Emergency Fund
Once you have paid off all non-mortgage debt and have a fully funded emergency fund, it's time to take the income you were applying to those steps and begin building a future with financial freedom in your sights!

This week our FPU classes continued on their path to financial peace by focusing on Baby Steps 4-7. Now that we know how to build a solid foundation with the first three Baby Steps, we are prepared to begin investing 15% of our income in good, growth stock mutual funds (Step 4), begin saving for college (Step 5), pay off the house early (Step 6), and to build wealth and give like no one else (Step 7). These final steps are done in order but at the same time. It is time to start dreaming about what you want your financial future to look like. What does a dream retirement look like for you? Get that picture - then use the Baby Steps to get you on the path to fulfill that dream. It all starts with working with our spouse or accountability partner to set your goals, learning to budget and live within your means, and following the Seven Baby Steps.

We are now almost half way through Breaking Chains, but we still have room for visitors in FPU classes, so feel free to stop in (see FPU class times and locations or call the church office), everyone is welcome! This week we will be learning all about making wise buying decisions. This class is great for learning how to keep great marketing from derailing your plans. Continue to follow Pastor Leo's sermon series, engage in your small group discussions over the next five weeks and pray for lives to be touched through the series. If you have questions or want to learn more about FPU or this week's article, reach out to Lisa Henney at Lisa_Henney@comcast.net (Education Team Lead and Financial Coach) or Julie Wilson at RilWil@sbcglobal.net (Prayer Team Lead and Financial Coach).

"The Way Forward" Report
General Conference Special Session: February 23-26, 2019
St. Louis, Missouri

Bishop evaluates Way Forward plans
Bishop evaluates Way Forward plans

The Council of Bishops has called a Special Session of the General Conference of The United Methodist Church to be held February 23-26, 2019 in St. Louis, Missouri. The purpose will be to receive and act on a report from the Commission on a Way Forward based on the recommendations of the Council of Bishops. The 32-member Commission was authorized by General Conference 2016 and appointed by the Council of Bishops to examine paragraphs in The Book of Discipline concerning human sexuality and exploring options to strengthen the unity of the church.

Bishop Jones' Analyses:

Praying Our Way Forward
Join us in Prayer for The United Methodist Church

This prayer movement is in response to the Council of Bishops initiative called "Praying Our Way Forward". We are called to pray for God's leadership to guide us effectively in fulfilling the mission & unity of the church. Since General Conference 2016, our church has experienced conflict & has needed to consider "How can we show God's great love and mercy to one another as we make decisions?"   Prayer is the most significant and positive spiritual thing we can do at this important moment in the history of the United Methodist Church.

Before the Special Session of the General Conference begins in St. Louis on February 23-26, the entire United Methodist family (12 million United Methodists around the world) is called to pray for the 864 delegates & 200 alternates that they may be guided by the Holy Spirit in their conduct, their attitudes, and their decisions. The Committee on Reference has decided 78 petitions have been cleared for consideration aimed at helping The United Methodist Church stay unified despite deep conflict over homosexuality.

Call the church office (281-463-2330) or email Linda Dunn at lindadunn49@gmail.com to schedule your prayer time.
