Dear Bear Facts Reader,

This is the last Bear Facts for the 2021-2022 school year. The newsletter is a combination of information from school, students, booster groups, clubs, teachers, SRVUSD and the PTSA, all strung together by our amazing diligent Bear Facts Editor, Tracy O'Brien. I am very grateful for her patience and professionalism and sad to see her graduate from the Cal High PTSA. The next Bear Facts will be sent out at the beginning of August by the new chair, Betsy Horvath. She has been our reliable PTSA Secretary for two years. I also want to thank Karen Robman (Treasurer), Kristie Vallinayagam (1st VP),  Anshu Jain (2nd VP), Sharlie Sellars (Sister School), and Heather Vaughn (Inclusion & Diversity) for their countless hours, as they also conclude their tenure in the Cal High PTSA after many years. I was inspired to work with our student leaders Nicholas Harvey (Historian), Sophia Kraskowsy (Student Rep) and Dyuthi Kumar (Inclusion & Diversity), thank you. And I am very grateful for the rest of my team to stay on for another year, Janet Wong, Heidi Ellicot-Pesic, Sri Sundar, Rema Chazbek, Kathy Stout, AnneMarie Vanniasinkam, Melanie James, and Deb Hart. I truly appreciated all the time our Teacher Rep, Bob Allen, has spent reporting from teachers at every PTSA meeting and the continuous presence of our Principal, the heart and soul of our school, Megan Keefer. Thank you all.
It has been an honor and pleasure to lead this wonderful team of PTSA volunteers and I am looking forward to a productive and informed new school year.

Have a wonderful summer,

Margret Roobol-Bóza, PhD
President '21-'22, California High PTSA

The Hospitality Committee would like to thank all families who contributed towards teacher lunches throughout the year! It's with your support that our teachers felt the love and appreciation for their hardwork educating our children. We look forward with teaming with you again next year!

May is Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month
Celebrate Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month. Though the terms Asian American and Pacific Islander are often grouped together, each on its own represents a vast range of nations, ethnic groups, cultures, histories, and experiences. This rich diversity is reflected in Asian American and Pacific Islander students.

Honoring each student’s unique identity means learning, teaching, and celebrating the diversity of communities with roots in Asia and the Pacific Islands. It also means taking a stand to support Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders within our schools and communities. With reports of anti-Asian hate crimes rising rapidly since 2019, it is ever more urgent to stand with our Asian American students, colleagues, and neighbors. As we work to ensure all students receive an excellent and equitable education, we must create safe, inclusive communities while denouncing and rooting out bias and hate. Regardless of their role, all adults in education play an important role in this work. https://asianpacificheritage.gov/
Contra Costa Libraries listings for family activities to celebrate AAPI Heritage Month. Check this link.
May is Mental Health Awareness Month
It’s important to support the mental health of all children—before, during and after challenges arise — and to support parents' and caregivers' mental health too.

National PTA has developed the PTA Healthy Minds Program to empower families to make mental health an everyday priority. Check out the resources on this webpage, including informational and activity resources directly for families and resources to help make mental health a priority.

Cal High is also the home of the Wellness Center "Zen Den". The Zen Den offers confidential well-being support for students. Students may self-refer for services, or be referred by a caring adult. For more information, visit the Zen Den website.
Raise the Base Call To Action!
Every year our schools get a 'base' amount of per-pupil funding from the State. Unfortunately, its never quite enough to provide for all of our District's needs. It is time to Raise the Base. California ranks well below the national average in per-pupil funding and our kids deserve more. Now is the time to make your voice heard while the Governor considers the State budget for next year.

What can you do? LEARN More, WRITE to your Legislator or the Governor and ATTEND a CAPTA web discussion with Kevin Gordon on May 24, 2022 to hear more about the Governor's budget.

Youth Clipper Cards
Did you know County Connection offers youth discounts using Youth Clipper cards? Our data indicates that the majority of students utilizing public transit for their transportation needs are still paying bus fares with cash. As a reminder to students, parents, and school staff, it is $2.50 each ride (transfers are not included) when paying by cash. With a Youth Clipper card, the bus fare is $1.60 local routes or $1.80 for express routes for youth up to age 18 and includes two bus transfers per payment.

Also built into all Clipper cards are daily passes. Daily passes for adults and youth cap at $3.75 per day. This daily pass is valid on all County Connection bus routes as well as neighboring agencies including, Tri-Delta Transit, Wheels, and WestCat.

Here you will find information on how to obtain a Youth Clipper card in English and Spanish. Would you be so kind as to forward this information to students and parents? If there are any parent nights, PTSA meetings, or any other type of informational meetings and you’d like to have County Connection staff available to give out information and answer questions, please let me know. We would be happy to be there.
