Green Tip: BYOB
BAGS, that is! Washingtonians use more than 2 billion single-use plastic bags each year. Recycling is not a good solution for bags and too many plastic bags end up in Puget Sound where they do not biodegrade. Plastic bags break down into smaller pieces that remain hazardous as they are consumed by filter-feeders, shellfish, fish, turtles, marine mammals, and birds.

The City of Redmond still does not have a plastic bag ban so let's help out as individuals! Next time you go grocery shopping, BRING YOUR OWN BAG! Here are some helpful tips:

  • Get in the habit of placing your keys, wallet, cell phone, or purse on top of your bags
  • Return bags to your vehicle, bag, or doorknob right after unloading groceries.
  • Put small bags in your backpack or purse.
  • Write "bring bags" at the top of your grocery list.
  • Designate someone in your family or household to be in charge of remembering bags.
  • Store multiple bags inside each other so you can grab them easily.
