Scotts Valley Unified School District (SVUSD) strives for all students to feel safe and welcome in their schools and to see themselves represented in the curriculum. Our country was conceived on a promise of equality and opportunity for all people — a promise that, despite the extraordinary progress we have made through the years, we have never fully lived up to. That is especially true when it comes to upholding the rights and dignity of the Indigenous people who were here long before the colonization of the Americas began. Honoring Indigenous People’s Heritage Month provides the opportunity to celebrate and acknowledge the land our community has benefited from as the ancestral grounds of the Amah (Aaa-Ma) Mutsun (Moot-sun) Tribal Band, who lived here long before us. Students can celebrate and gain a rich understanding of the Native American contribution to American culture in many fields, including the fields of agriculture, medicine, music, language, and art.
