NOVEMBER HIGHLIGHTS

HONOR OUR VETERANS

This Veterans Day, the American Breast Cancer Foundation would like to draw attention to a critical issue facing our nation’s heroes: the rising incidencs of breast cancer risk among veterans. Let’s honor our veterans not only for their service but by helping them access the care they deserve. Make a donation today. Together, we can stand by those who stood for us.

Due to environmental and chemical exposures during active service—such as prolonged contact with toxic substances and the stresses of deployment—veterans, both men and women, may experience a higher risk of developing breast cancer. Studies indicate a possible link between these exposures, high levels of stress, and even post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) as contributing factors to the increased breast cancer risk, emphasizing the importance of early and regular screenings for veterans.

While breast cancer predominantly affects women, male veterans are also at risk, with about 1% of breast cancer cases occurring in men. Many veterans remain unaware of this risk, potentially delaying early detection and treatment. ABCF is committed to providing veterans with accessible, affordable breast cancer screenings and diagnostic testing, ensuring no veteran faces this journey alone.

If you know a veteran, share this message. Let them know that ABCF’s support is available to help them navigate their breast health journey, from early screening to vital resources for care and support.

NEW RESEARCH ON ASIAN AMERICANS

Empowering Asian American Women: Addressing Breast Cancer Risks and Health Disparities. Despite lower overall breast cancer rates, Asian American women are at higher risk of developing aggressive types of breast cancer at younger ages. However, cultural stigmas, language barriers, and limited awareness often prevent timely screenings and early detection. It’s crucial to spotlight these disparities and ensure every woman has the knowledge and resources needed to protect her health throughout the year. ABCF is focused on the disparities in the incidence of breast cancer especially in undeserved and under-resourced communities. Please share this information with your network and community. MAKE TAXES WORK FOR YOU

The end of the year can be one of the most impactful times to give back to your favorite causes. By making an informed charitable contribution before year-end giving deadlines, you may qualify for a current-year deduction if you itemize your taxes, potentially offsetting some or all tax liabilities from those events. Whether you’ve experienced a significant taxable event or you already planned to help a non-profit, such as ABCF, by year-end, there are several ways to support your community —you can give by cash, check, credit card, or even donate non-cash contributions (vehicles, real estate, etc).

Real State Donations & Vehicle Donations: With our Real Estate and Vehicle Donation Programs, you can make a substantial difference saving lives in your community. By donating distressed real estate, motorcycles, boats, and other vehicles, you’re supporting breast cancer services and early detection programs across the country and in hurricane affected areas in Florida, North Carolina, and South Carolina, and elsewhere. Your contribution qualifies as a tax-deductible donation, offering a unique opportunity to give back in a meaningful way.

NOVEMBER 15TH IS NATIONAL PHILANTHROPY DAY

National Philanthropy Day (NPD) is celebrated on November 15th each year to recognize the contributions of philanthropy to society. The day honors individuals, businesses, and organizations that are active in the philanthropic community. It also celebrates the daily contributions of people and organizations to causes and missions.

In honor of NPD, the American Breast Cancer Foundation would like to highlight the incredible impact that our Community Health Care Partners are making around the country. These medical clinics and health care consortiums provide reduced cost or free breast cancer screenings, diagnostic mammograms, and ultrasounds to the clients we serve. ABCF understands the needs of our applicants and only partners with FDA-approved mammography centers for the highest standards of care.

SPOTLIGHT ON CLEVELAND CLINIC

ABCF PARTNER:

CLEVELAND CLINIC: Mammogram Bus Reaches 380+ Patients in Underserved Communities

Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers among women, and mammograms can help catch the disease early when it’s easier to treat. That’s why Cleveland Clinic has launched the Mobile Mammography Unit – to help bring mammograms close to home for those who may not have access to these routine screenings.

The new Mobile Mammography Unit, housed on a bus and featuring a state-of-the-art mobile mammography system, has served more than 380 patients since it began in May 2024. It also has serviced 35 community events throughout Northeast Ohio, including Cleveland, Canton, Painesville, Mansfield, Norwalk and Sandusky. Last month, they had a mammogram clinic at Erie County Health Department (photo above).

“We want to positively impact the lives of patients in their communities, by removing barriers of health access. Every woman, regardless of her zip code or socioeconomic status, should have access to life-saving breast cancer screenings,” says Lynn Rudin, a clinical manager in Imaging.

The bus is fitted with a Siemens Inspiration Unit, a 3D mammography device that provides mammogram screening. It’s the same device used within Cleveland Clinic facilities. Patients also have access to changing rooms and a waiting area.

Cleveland Clinic Cancer Institute’s Community Outreach team provides patient navigation and follow-up services. “If these patients have a positive experience here, they can share it with their friends and community. When word spreads, it makes a difference in their neighborhoods,” says Nasheema Anderson, Community Outreach Department Manager.

Currently, the team is actively creating partnerships with church organizations and nonprofits to help expand access to mammogram screenings. It has partnered with organizations such as Medworks, City of Cleveland, Federally Qualified Health Centers, HOLA, City of Warrensville, LQBTQ Center and Norma Herr.

For more information or to schedule a screening through Cleveland Clinic Cancer Institute’s community outreach program, those interested can call 419.609.2826 or visit clevelandclinic.org/outreachscreening.
