It's hard to believe that August is already upon us, signaling the beginning of summer's end. But, don't put away your Virginia Wine Guide just yet, as there are still lots of places to visit. Virginia wineries in August are among the "coolest" places, where you can sip wine in air-conditioned comfort or picnic in the shade.

Our August Winery of the Month is Sunset Hills Vineyard in Purcellville. It's a beautiful setting with award-winning wines and an inviting Tasting Room. Try the tasting that includes a chocolate and wine pairing! (You could win this decadent delight by entering the Sweepstakes below). Also, read about the "Women in Wine" at Sunset Hills in our ETC column.

If you love beach music, the place to be on August 10 is Chateau Morrisette in Floyd. The Black Dog Beach Music Festival is our featured Festival of the Week. The Embers, Carolina beach music legends, are the headliners.

Have a great August and let us hear about your travels. Cheers!

WOMSunset

Turning sunshine into wine.

A combination of modern science and historic renovation has given new life and new purpose to this 140-year old farm which today, as Sunset Hills Vineyard, is a favorite destination for wine lovers.

From vine to wine, the grapes pass a set of human eyes and hands a minimum of 15 times to ensure that only the best grapes end up in your glass. It is this relentless pursuit of excellence that has earned Sunset Hills dozens of medals in local, national and international wine competitions. They are dedicated to making fine wines and doing it in a way that is gentle on the land. That is why they use Virginia sunshine to make Virginia wine twice: once to grow the grapes and again to power the 154 solar panels that run the winery and winemaking operations.

Corry Craighill, Winemaker
After graduating from the University of Virginia in 2011, it was Corry's love of travel that first led her to the wine industry. She was soon working the harvest in far off places like New Zealand, Australia, South Africa and France, with a few closer to home in Oregon and Virginia. Although Corry has been tempted by opportunities in Sonoma, CA, her desire to start her career as a winemaker in her home state of Virginia has kept her planted close to home. It excites her that Virginia is still in the early experimental phase of winemaking, and she really believes in the quality of wine that can be crafted here. She earned her WSET Level 3 certification and continues her wine studies. If Corry is not drinking a Virginia Chardonnay, she will most likely have a glass of Pinot Noir in her hand. When she's not in the cellar, she's likely out hiking, playing her cello or gone for a run. www.sunsethillsvineyard.com

Silvia Liggieri, Vineyard Manager
Silvia was born and raised in Trieste, Italy, near the historic wine country known as Carso. She completed her bachelor's degree in Viticulture and Enology at the University of Udine in the heart of the wine region of Friuli. During her studies, she worked in different wineries located in Friuli and Sardegna and traveled around the Italian wine regions. It is thanks to the work with the viticulture research department for her experimental thesis that she started to explore and become fond of viticulture research. Following graduation, Silvia interned at the Viticulture Chemistry and Enology (VCE) department of E&J Gallo Winery in California. After traveling the US and Italy, Silvia moved to Virginia where she completed her Master's in Viticulture at Virginia Tech under her adviser Dr. Tony Wolf. www.sunsethillsvineyard.com
