BEAT THE SUMMER SLIDE
Did you know that many children experience summer learning loss also known as Summer Setback or Summer Slide? The Summer Slide disproportionately impacts our most vulnerable communities, especially those in grades K-3rd. In one summer these community members are more likely to slide in both English language and math learning over the summer than gains made during the previous academic year. If you’d like to read more about Summer Slide, we recommend this article. Summer Slide occurs under normal circumstances but this year is of particular concern. During the pandemic, our youth were hurtled into a difficult-to-navigate virtual learning environment. The pandemic and its many challenges likely made this year’s summer learning loss greater than ever.

This is where your Library comes in! Our annual Summer Learning Challenge is a great way to combat Summer Slide and it is even more important this year than ever. Numerous studies have shown that summer programs at libraries help ensure that school children retain reading and learning skills over the break. The Summer Learning Challenge is underway now through August 31st. To get started, stop by any Redwood City Public Library location to pick up your free book. Kids, Teens, and Adults are welcome to read a minimum of 20 minutes a day. You can read or listen to your favorite stories individually or as a family. You are also challenged to try at least five new things this summer; a new recipe, museum, hiking trail, cultural event—ANYTHIHNG! Return your completed log electronically or in person and be entered for fabulous prizes. Kids and Teens up to 18 years old are entered for a chance to win our $1,000 scholarship.

If you have questions about Summer Learning, need recommendations for books to read, or simply wish to inspire a love of reading in your children, stop by one of our libraries. We love to help!
