Ways to BEAT the SWEET

The words "Halloween" and "Healthy" are generally two words that do not go together. Sugar seems to find its way into everything during this holiday. Making wholesome fall treats is a fantastic way to embrace the holiday and stay on the path to health. Watch your sweet tooth by avoiding poor nutrition in processed and packaged sugary sweets. Make your own with these healthy sugar alternatives.

  • Raw Honey: Naturally delicious alternative to white sugar. It's a fabulous treat in the summer and fall when it has just been harvested and is at its freshest. Raw honey has anti-viral, anti-fungal and anti-bacterial properties that are normally lost during processing.

  • 100% Maple Syrup: Maple syrup is sweet - but it's more than just flavor. Maple syrup is an excellent source of manganese and a good source of zinc.

  • Yacon Syrup: New on the market, yacon syrup is derived from the yacon plant, a tuber native to South America. This glucose-free (doesn't spike your blood sugar) natural sweetener contains fructooligosaccharides (FOS), a common prebiotic. The 2007 Journal of Nutrition states, "A prebiotic is a selectively fermented ingredient that allows specific changes, both in the composition and/or activity in the gastrointestinal microflora that confers benefits upon host well-being and health."

  • Stevia: A zero-calorie, all-natural sweetener is a great way to appease your sugar craving. Stevia can be substituted for sugar in such things as baked goods, or srinkled (sparingly) in coffee. Stevia is now found in delicious liquid flavors like vanilla crème, apricot nectar, and lemon drop and will spice up your favorite dessert.

  • Agave: Agave nectar differs from other sugars because it has a low glycemic index. This means that it will provide a sweet taste without causing a spike in your blood sugar. The taste of agave nectar is comparable, though not identical, to honey.

Cranberry Dreams Trail Mix

Algonquin Indians were among the first to harvest wild cranberries. They used them
for food, medicine and as a symbol of peace.

1⁄4 cup carob chips
1⁄4 cup raw pistachios
1⁄2 cup dried cranberries
1⁄2 cup raw pumplin seeds
1 cup toasted oats
