Tips on Perennial Maintenance

Get ready to increase your plant material by splitting your current supply of perennials.

Iris's are ready to be dug up:

Dig a section

Find a crease and break off at this point

Dig a hole, add new topsoil, and plant the roots completely, but leave the bulb close to the surface

Place the fan where you will see the best side of it when it flowers

Cut the fans in an upside-down V shape

Fertilize with a slow-release product in late winter or early spring

Happiest in full sun or partial shade and well drained soil

Hosta's can be split in early spring or fall as the temperatures cool

Use a spade or fork to lift the clump out of the ground

Clean the roots to inspect the structure

Split the hosta into 2-4 clumps to transplant

Replant in shady, well drained soil

Keep the roots moist for the first 2 weeks to help root establishment
