At this time of year, we ask ourselves, “What practices should I adopt for Lent?” “Giving something up” really does not seem to lead to a significant deepening of our spiritual life. Changing from “not doing something” to taking positive actions, is more beneficial. We can look to the example of St. Angela Merici, whose life was one of prayer, fasting, working for the poor and almsgiving. Adopting our own routine of prayer, volunteering with the poor or elderly or contributing to charitable causes develops our spirituality and fosters a deeper relationship with God. By imitating her life of prayer, sacrifice and charity we adopt the “new life” St. Angela and her friend, Jesus, want for us. |
