Brodiaea is the secret ingredient for stellar May/June gardens and bouquets. It's simple~just include it in every garden from horticultural zones 6 through 9.
Classified and reclassified under Brodiaea, Dichelostemma and Triteleia over time, Brodiaea, for the most part, are native to the U.S. west coast. Named after Scottish horticulturist James Brodie, the genus is commonly referred to as The Fool's Onions.
Both deer- and rodent-resistant, these 19th century naturalizers make the most wonderful, long-lasting display and cutting flowers. Brodiaea corms yield composite flowers with star-shaped or tubular florets suspended on wiry stems that usually form the shape of inverted umbrellas, and grass-like foliage.
It's terrific planted en masse in sunny woodland borders, natural wild flower settings and in clusters throughout perennial beds.

Brodiaea Planting Tips
Brodiaea are best grown in moist, fertile, well-draining soil in full sun to partial sunlight (never shade) with winter and spring moisture, and summer dryness. Unlike most bulbs, it can handle, and may even prefer, soil that has a bit of moisture, but never in a spot that gets waterlogged at any time. A prized cut flower, Brodiaea will naturalize readily if it's happy where it's planted and left undisturbed. Brodiaea naturalizes by bulb offsets (called bulbils: baby bulbs on the sides of the mother bulb you've planted, or more accurately, cormels since they are corms). Since Brodiaea is not tremendously hardy, in marginally hardy areas, you may want to apply no more than a 2" layer of mulch after the surface of the ground freezes to protect it from winter temperature spiking in the event of inconsistent snow coverage.
You'll need about nine bulbs per square foot. Plant the corms about 4" to 5" deep and 3" to 4" apart.
