December 2016

The Christmas season is such a wonderful time of year for so many reasons. The chance to spend time with our family and friends, to get dressed up for parties and gatherings, and to choose special gifts for those we care about. At the Mulberry Bush Bookstores we believe books make the best gifts because they're timeless, personal, rereadable, and so enjoyable.

We have beautiful new books arriving daily. We also have a unique collection of Christmas cards, stocking stuffers, calendars and special gifts for everyone on your list.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your friendship and support in 2016. We wish you a Christmas filled with peace, love, family and friends and a joyous New Year in 2017.
Merry Christmas!

Big History
by DK
Why does the universe work the way it does? Why are stars so big? Why are humans so small? What does it mean to be human? Big History blends geology, biology, physics, anthropology, sociology, and so much more to tell one coherent story, taking us right back to our origins and exploring how a unique series of events led to and then impacted human existence: how everything came to be, where we fit in, and even where we are going. Graphics, artworks, timelines, and at-a-glance overviews make the causes and effects of pivotal events and major thresholds in Big History instantly accessible, and evidence features explain how we know what we know.

Here are some familiar faces from the online series, joined by dozens of dogs never seen before-all whose engaging personalities shine through. Sprinkled throughout the photos are words of wisdom from the Buddha, Gandhi, and other meditative masters, inspiring messages that, with the photos, warm the heart and soothe the spirit.

No Man's Land
by David Baldacci

Two men. Thirty years. John Puller's mother, Jackie, vanished thirty years ago from Fort Monroe, Virginia, when Puller was just a boy. Paul Rogers has been in prison for ten years. But twenty years before that, he was at Fort Monroe. One night three decades ago, Puller's and Rogers' worlds collided with devastating results, and the truth has been buried ever since. Until now.
by Michael Chabon

From the Jewish slums of prewar South Philadelphia to the invasion of Germany, from a Florida retirement village to the penal utopia of New York's Wallkill Prison, from the heyday of the space program to the twilight of the American Century, Moonglow collapses an era into a single life and a lifetime into a single week. A lie that tells the truth, a work of fictional non-fiction, an autobiography wrapped in a novel disguised as a memoir, Moonglow is Chabon at his most daring, his most moving, his most Chabonesque.
I Loved Her In the Movies Memories of Hollywood's Legendary Actresses by Robert J. Wagner In a career that has spanned more than sixty years Robert Wagner has witnessed the twilight of the Golden Age of Hollywood and the rise of television, becoming a beloved star in both media. During that time he became acquainted, both professionally and socially, with the remarkable women who were the greatest screen personalities of their day. I Loved Her in the Movies is his intimate and revealing account of the charisma of these women on film, why they became stars, and how their specific emotional and dramatic chemistries affected the choices they made as actresses as well as the choices they made as women.
Swing Time
by Zadie Smith

Two brown girls dream of being dancers, but only one, Tracey, has talent. The other has ideas, about rhythm and time, about black bodies and black music, about what constitutes a tribe, or makes a person truly free. It's a close but complicated childhood friendship that ends abruptly in their early twenties, never to be revisited, but never quite forgotten either.
I'll Take You There
by Wally Lamb

I'll Take You There centers on Felix, a film scholar who runs a Monday night movie club in what was once a vaudeville theater. One evening, while setting up a film in the projectionist booth, he's confronted by the ghost of Lois Weber, a trailblazing motion picture director from Hollywood's silent film era. Lois invites Felix to revisit, and in some cases relive, scenes from his past as they are projected onto the cinema's big screen.
The Road to Ruin The Global Elites Secret Plan For the Next Financial Crisis
by James Rickards

As Rickards shows in this frightening,
meticulously researched book, governments around the world have no compunction about conspiring against their citizens. They will have stockpiled hard assets when stock exchanges are closed, ATMs shut down, money market funds frozen, asset managers instructed not to sell securities, negative interest rates imposed, and cash withdrawals denied.

Small Great Things
by Jodi Picoult
"This novel is a "10 out of 10" for me. It's a fast-paced, riveting drama, touching on all the current issues, with a surprise-ending mystery.  Jodi Picoult's best book to date.  A perfect gift for you and anyone on your list."

A History of the World in 500 Walks
by Sarah Baxter

"In this book Baxter explores world history by walking (and in many cases hiking) where our ancestors did.  Beginning in prehistory and moving through the ancient world, the middle ages, toward the modern world, the 19th and the 20th centuries she covers destinations on every continent giving fascinating glimpses of culture and history as she goes.  Baxter includes mini-maps, gorgeous photographs and important know-before-you-go information in the sidebars."

Cowboys of the Americas
by Wade Davis

"With photography by Luis Fabini, author Wade Davis takes us on a journey through South America into Mexico, the United States and Canada. 'Man, horse, and wild.'  An inspiring journey with fantastic photography; this would make an excellent gift!"

Owl: A Year in the
Life of North
American Owls
by Paul Bannick

"Fascinating information and riveting photographs of these magnificent birds."

by Benjamin Grant MARIANNE'S PICK

"The author was inspired by the Overview Effect: the universality of experience that astronauts have upon viewing the whole of earth from space and seeing it's interconnectedness in a way few of us will be fortunate enough to experience.  This book shows pictures of earth from above via satellite images, but not necessarily in ways we've come to expect.  It can be fun to try and identify what you're looking at before you read the blurb."

How the program works:
The Angel Tree program helps stock the SOS Toy Shop where parents, grandparents and caregivers can shop for free for their children. Visit a local participating business in mid-November and December and you'll discover an SOS Angel Tree.

The gifts listed on these Angels have been identified as "that one special gift" that a child or youth is hoping for.

Purchase the gift listed on one of the Angel ornaments (or as close to it as possible), attach the Angel to your unwrapped gift and return it to the business location to ensure it is included in the gift distribution

We are happy to be participating in the SOS Angel Tree Program again this year.

We stock all the Angel Tree book selections and are pleased to be able to donate several boxes of books to help fill the shelves of the SOS store.
