Dear Neighbors

January began with an unusual snow storm creating a depth of 4 to 6 inches in most areas of Beaver Creek. Then came the coldest freeze that most of us have felt here, temperature reported to sink to 5 to 8 degrees. Our plumbers have probably already put down money for summer vacations! We've also had rain and wind and some beautiful days, too. And the last week of the month looks to be mostly sunny and mild.

This Saturday there is a double special event at the Beaver Creek Adult Center which spent some time closed due to a burst pipe. The main room of the Center is open for business as usual. (It may be awhile before the library room has new carpeting and is reopened.) Saturday AM the semiannual Dump the Drugs is from 10 AM to Noon. Then at 4 PM the annual Yavapai County District 2 Community meeting combined with the annual Beaver Creek Community Association are welcoming anyone who would like to attend. Some very useful information is provided at this meeting as well as some good food. The following Monday the Verde Valley Photography Society has a reception at the Beaver Creek Library. More information on these events is below.

At the December Governing Board Meeting for Beaver Creek School, newly elected board members Daniel Dubien and Brandi Bateman and reelected member Betty Hart were sworn in by Yavapai County Superintendent Tim Carter. Perry Krowne and Jackie Harshman continued in their terms. Retiring board members Karen DuFresne and Jo Burke were honored for their long term and fine service at this, their final meeting. At the January meeting Jackie Harshman was elected President and Brandi Bateman was elected Clerk.  Karin Ward and Katrina Sacco continue respectively as Superintendent and Principal of the school.

Upcoming Special Events for End of January

Saturday, 1/26-Dump the Drugs   is back at the Beaver Creek Adult Center from 10 AM to Noon.  This event gives an opportunity to safely dispose of unwanted prescription or over-the-counter medication (including ones for pets).  Please drop medications off at the Beaver Creek Adult Center (across from Cricket's), 4250 E. Zuni Way in Lake Montezuma.  The event is sponsored by the BC Community Action Team, YC Sheriff's Office and MATFORCE.   Jeannette Estes is our local contact at 928-567-5421 for more information . Saturday, 1/26--BCCA Annual Mtg & Supervisor Thurman Community Mtg. The annual Beaver Creek Community Association (BCCA) meeting in conjunction with District 2 Supervisor Thomas Thurman's Community Meeting will start at 4 PM in the Beaver Creek Adult Center located at 4250 E Zuni Way in Lake Montezuma. Supervisor Thurman will speak about Yavapai County and Beaver Creek issues. Yavapai County Public Works will present roads information and Development Services will discuss land use. BCCA will present an update including a brief presentation on our soon to be distributed business directory, the 2018 financial report and conduct the board of director election. Members and non-members are welcome to attend and enjoy some tasty refreshments and visiting with neighbors. More information available at     
Monday, 1/28-The Grief Recovery Course will be held from 6:30 to 8:30 PM in Sheets Hall at Montezuma Chapel, 3450 E Rusty Spurs Rd in Rimrock, for 13 weeks. Your attendance can start at any week. There is a $15 book charge for which scholarships are available. The course is sponsored by Grief Share. Please contact Cyndi Howell at 928-567-4759 for more information.

Thursday, 1/31-The Verde Valley Photography Society has a Closing Reception for their photography Art Exhibit at Beaver Creek School from 3:30 to 5 PM.

Saturday, 3/2-The Beaver Creek Adult Center BCAC will hold its Annual General Meeting and Election of Board Members  at 10 AM. A light lunch will be served. Four Board Members will be retiring this year and replacements are being sought. According to the by-laws, all membership dues are to be paid in order to vote or to run for election to the Board. Applications for Board Members are available at the Center and contain information regarding campaigning between now and the election.

Saturday, 3/2--TEA TIME AGAIN!   This year Lake Montezuma Women's Civic Club Tea will be from 2 to 4 PM at Beaver Creek School, 4810 Beaver Creek Rd in Rimrock.  There will be a surprise fashion show, silent auction, hats for sale plus delicious tea fare.  Tickets are $20 and limited to 80.  Tickets are available from Bonnie McConachie 567-5017, Lisa Delight 928-451-4360, Betty Hart 567-2946, Carol Keeton 567-0457, Darla Melcher 592-0782 and any Civic Club member.  This is a fundraiser for a Beaver Creek student scholarship and to support local community organizations.  Don't miss it-get your tickets now! The Good Things Happening in the
Beaver Creek School District -December 2018
 Happy New Year 2019!

Our annual winter concert was a festive and enjoyable time. The kids worked hard to put on a great show. A special thank you to the teachers and paraprofessionals who helped them along the way, as well as the many family members and friends who supported them.
Mrs. Patricia Garitson has been working with Arizona State University to support research on healthy eating in schools, because of that partnership she has obtained a salad bar for the cafeteria.

All classes participated in a winter door decorating contest. This year each class decorated their classroom door with concepts from a winter themed storybook. This allowed each class to share some joy as well as integrating literacy standards into the activity.
The 7th and 8th grade classes held a bake sale to raise funds for their end of year trip. They baked together, and brought things from home to sell. It was very successful, and a great way to teach economics using a hands on approach.
The NAU Practicum students finished their semester in Preschool and Head Start. A new group of students will start the end of the month.
Verde Valley First Books Readers have come to preschool and Head start to read books and give the students books.
Thanks to the Beaver Creek Community, we were able to help 46 families and 110 children to have a brighter Christmas. A special thanks to Merryl Dones for coordinating with Beaver Creek Baptist Church, the Adult Center, the Beaver Creek Kiwanis, and Verde Valley Toys for Tots and Cottonwood Wal-Mart
Several Community Members coordinating with Eileen Conn have begun painting the bathrooms with positive messages.

Swift Water Rescue CCF&MD

On January 19 th  , at approximately 09:40 PM, Copper Canyon Fire and Medical were dispatched to a report of a person needing rescued from high waters on the Verde River.  Upon arrival, crews made voice contact with the stranded person standing on an island surrounded by rapid moving water.  Copper Canyon Fire and Medical deployed their  Swift Water Team which is made up of highly trained technical rescue members.   The stranded  patient was extricated safely from the river without issue and then evaluated by medical. There were no reported injuries to any of the responders, and the 1 patient refused further treatment after a medical evaluation.
 
CCFMD wants to remind everyone that attempting to drive or walk across flooding streams or rivers  is simply not worth the risk.  From the perspective of driving a vehicle, it can be difficult to judge the depth of water on the road.  It only takes inches for the tires to lose tractions and begin to float downstream.  Please drive safely and avoid tasking unnecessary risks.

MONTEZUMA CASTLE AND TUZIGOOT NATIONAL MONUMENTS ANNOUNCE ENTRANCE FEE-FREE DAYS FOR 2019
 
Montezuma Castle and Tuzigoot National Monuments will waive its entrance fee on five days in 2019.
The five entrance fee-free days for 2019 will be:
●     Monday, January 21 - Martin Luther King, Jr. Day
●     Saturday, April 20 - Start of National Park Week/National Junior Ranger Day
●     Sunday, August 25 - National Park Service Anniversary
●     Saturday, September 28 - National Public Lands Day
●     Monday, November 11 - Veterans Day
"We are very excited to provide the public opportunities to visit us on our fee free days, as well
as throughout the year, and hope everyone takes advantage of these days," says Dorothy FireCloud, Montezuma Castle and Tuzigoot National Monuments Superintendent.
As of January 1st, 2019, Montezuma Castle and Tuzigoot National Monument will normally charge $15 per adult 16 and older. Admission covers both monuments for 7 days. Children 15 and younger are always free. Western National Parks Association will offer a 15% discount on all items in the park stores during fee free days, and is tax free every day.
 
In addition to entrance fees being waived, the following events will occur:
January 21st - Day of Service. Join us at Montezuma Well as we get our traditional use garden ready for spring planting. Work includes pulling weeds, tilling the soil, etc. Please wear sturdy shoes and sun protection.   Gloves and tools are provided, as well as warm beverages and snacks.
April 20th - Junior Ranger Day activities at Tuzigoot National Monument and Native American music concert at Montezuma Castle at 6pm
August 25th - Birthday celebration at noon at both monuments
September 28th - Volunteer event for Montezuma Well garden
November 11th - Veterans Day Event
 
Montezuma Castle and Tuzigoot National Monuments are two of 115 national parks that has an entrance fee. The other 303 national parks do not charge an entrance fee. The National Park System includes more than 85 million acres and is comprised of 418 sites, including national parks, national historical parks, national monuments, national recreation areas, national battlefields, and national seashores.
Last year, 331 million people visited national parks spending $18.2 billion which supported 306,000 jobs across the country and had a $35.8 billion impact on the U.S. economy.
An annual park pass for Montezuma Castle and Tuzigoot National Monuments costs $45 and allows unlimited entrance to both monuments for four adults. The annual $80 America the Beautiful National Parks and Federal Recreational Lands Pass allows unlimited entrance to more than 2,000 federal recreation areas, including all national parks. There are also free or discounted passes available for senior citizens, current members of the military, families of fourth grade students, and disabled citizens.
