Dear Neighbors

This 'N That

Superintendent Tom Thurman will present information of interest to all on January 25 during the Annual Beaver Creek Community Association meeting which will be at 4 PM in the Beaver Creek Adult Center.

We have not heard any news about our requests for a delay of closure for the Lake Montezuma Post Office in order to appeal the decision. The petitions will be available to sign through Wednesday. We ask that you hold off on closing out your mailboxes there until the first week in February in order to give the government a chance to respond favorably to community concerns.

Another month, another fire. Fortunately, this time the structure as well as the occupants survived. POBs to all first responder units involved. Photos and details below.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES AT MONTEZUMA CASTLE & Montezuma Well

The National Park Service is looking for several dedicated local volunteers to assist with seasonal visitor programming at Montezuma Castle and Montezuma Well February through May 2020.  This is a great opportunity to learn more about the National Park Service and try out volunteering on a temporary assignment with a minimum commitment of 4 hours a week. We have a variety of positions available to accommodate any interest and/or ability. We will be offering several training opportunities in January and February 2020. Winter is a great time to train and become confident in your knowledge before our busiest season of the year starts mid-February through May.  Each position below will have two shifts, 9am-1pm and 1pm-5pm.  Please indicate your availability and shift preference in your application.

Positions at Montezuma Castle National Monument:
Visitor Center Greeter and Pass Checker
Montezuma Castle is looking for several volunteers from February 17- May 30 to assist with the long lines at our registers.  Visitation is at our highest during those months and the visitor center gets very crowded.  Volunteers checking passes provide a valuable service to our visitors by expediting their entry into our park and by explaining the best value pass to purchase. This position involves sitting at a table outside.

Junior Ranger Helper
Volunteers are needed to staff our Junior Ranger table at Montezuma Castle from February 17-May 30.  During our busiest time of year we often exceed 100 Junior Rangers a day. We currently have 2 programs: One for Montezuma Castle and the state-wide AZ Junior Explorer book.  Volunteers will let visitors know about the program, hand out and explain the books, check the answers with the visitor and swear them in as Junior Rangers.  Anyone can be a Junior Ranger, ages 0-100+. This position involves sitting at a table outside.

Trail Docent
Volunteers are needed to walk our trail answering visitor questions and offering guided tours. This position involves standing for long periods or walking a 1/3 mile paved loop trail several times.

Positions at Montezuma Well*
If you have ever wanted to share your appreciation for Montezuma Well with visitors from near and far, this is your chance to do so! This position may include sitting at a table greeting visitors or standing for long periods and walking a moderate-strenuous ½ mile trail with many steps and inclines.

*A federal background check is required for Montezuma Well.

To apply, please see our website at https://www.nps.gov/moca/getinvolved/volunteer.htm. For more information or questions, email [email protected].
Copper Canyon Fire & Medical Report

On January 8  at 02:42 in the morning, Copper Canyon Fire and Medical District Stations 81 and 82 were dispatched to a residential fire at 2740 E. Outlaw Way in Rimrock. Emergency crews arrived on scene to find a small residential structure with smoke coming from a gable end on the roof line. The incident was quickly upgraded to a working fire, bringing mutual aid responses from Verde Valley Fire, Sedona Fire and Yavapai County Sheriff's office. Crews deployed an offensive strategy, stretching hose lines into the structure. Upon entry into the structure emergency crews found a small smoldering type fire in the attic space of the home. Crews quickly extinguished the fire and overhauled the remaining area.

The structure sustained minimal damage, though it did displace the occupants. There were no injuries sustained by the occupants of the home as they evacuated without incident from the structure prior to emergency crews arrival. No emergency crews sustained injuries either. CCFMD would like to thank Verde Valley fire and Sedona Fire for their assistance on this incident. The cause of the fire is still under investigation at this time
