THERE HAVE BEEN SIGHTINGS OF

BLACK BEARS ON OUR GROUNDS

The Bear Facts: • New York State has a healthy population of approximately 8,000 black bears • The average adult male bear weighs about 300 lbs, females weigh about 160 lbs. • Black bears are New York’s second largest land mammal, after moose. • Females have a litter of two to three cubs every other year, although litters of four are not unusual. • Preferred natural foods include nuts, roots, fruit, plants and insects. Bears scavenge dead animals but rarely feed on live prey.

Why are there Bears on our grounds?

  • The simple answer is food! Bears are more likely to seek out human food sources in the spring and the summer. During these times, natural food sources may be scarce
  • The leading cause of bear complaints is bears getting into residential garbage and bird feeders.
  • People and black bears often find themselves living nearby one another. Bears can obtain all of the nourishment they need from the forest, but they are intelligent and opportunistic animals. They will find and consume the easiest food they can access. They will also remember where they find easy food, then return to that location frequently.

So what do we do to keep bears away from BL?

  • Key is to reduce, as much as possible, the source of food by being extra vigilant in managing your garbage. The simplest way to avoid problems with bears is to remove all unnatural food sources.
  • At all times, keep your garbage in a strong can, preferably with a tight fitting lid.
  • Keep your can next to your house and take it out to the curb after 12 noon on pick up days.
  • Never, ever leave garbage by the curb overnight.
  • Garbage accumulated over Shabbos should be stored in a sturdy garbage can with a tight fitting lid until Sunday's pick up. GARBAGE SHOULD NOT BE PUT OUT ON SHABBOS, EVER!! If you are not home to bring your garbage can out on a Sunday, please ask a neighbor to bring your can to the curb.
  • Do not leave your can out Sunday night, please put it out after 8am on Monday morning. If you are leaving BL before pick up time, please ask a neighbor to bring your can to the curb.

So what do we do when we see a bear?

  • Use noise to scare bears away: Yell, clap, or bang anything immediately upon sighting a bear.
  • Stay calm: Walk slowly and speak in a loud and calm voice.
  • Leave slowly: Cautiously back away from the bear and leave the area.

Don't:

  • Don’t panic. Most black bears prefer to avoid humans. Bears are more likely to be afraid of you than you are of them.
  • Don't approach, surround, or corner a bear: Bears aggressively defend themselves when they feel threatened. Be especially cautious around cubs as mother bears are very protective.
  • Don't run from a bear: They may chase.

Further Action:

  • If a bear approaches you: Raise your arms and speak in a loud, calm voice while backing away.
  • If a bear charges you: Stand your ground.
  • If a bear follows you: Stand your ground. Intimidate it by making yourself look bigger by waving arms, clapping, shouting, or banging sticks. Prepare to fight.
  • If a bear makes contact with you: Fight back with anything at hand (knife, stick, rock, or fists).
