Once an Aspiring ASMS Student, Now an ASMS Faculty Member
|
|
As an Alabama native, I first became familiar with ASMS as a sophomore in high school, making the decision on whether or not to travel 6 hours away from home in order to attend the school for my junior and senior years. My decision not to join the community at that time was a difficult one, but even though I remained at my home school, I maintained an appreciation for the opportunities that ASMS provided for my fellow peers across The state. Oddly enough, when I first started in the chemistry graduate program at the University of Alabama, a career in education wasn’t even under consideration. However, through my work as a teaching assistant, I embraced the opportunities I had to teach more and more with each passing semester. As a result, when I was searching for job openings as a post-doctoral scholar and a new opportunity to join the ASMS community arose, the choice this second time around was a significantly easier one to make. Teaching the students here at ASMS during my first term has been a pleasure. These are some of the brightest young minds, not just in the state but in the entire nation, and I look forward to seeing where their abilities will take them.
Dr. Matthew Davenport
Faculty Member, ASMS Chemistry Department

The ASMS Off the Leash club (animal rescue club) successfully raised $600 dollars for the Animal Rescue Foundation (ARF) of Mobile during their Pet Portrait Club Event. Community members donated $15 via ARF's Facebook page and an ASMS student used their artistic talents to draw the dog or cat (or sometimes both) in the spirit of Mardi Gras! It was a huge success for animal rescue in Mobile! ARF is already planning a project with the City Animal Shelter to put those funds to good use!
