Dear Friends of The Pony Express,
Watching young kids come into our program struggling to find themselves, and seeing them grow into mature confident adults never gets old. I had the opportunity to share time with two of ours. Jon and Cassandra have participated in our Equine Assisted Skills for Youth Program for many years. When asked where they would be if not for our program (my question), Jon’s response was “either in prison or dead," (see video below).
I am pleased to say that Jon is now working full time as a security guard and making plans for a future that is filled with promise and possibility.
Cassandra has been in our program since she was 12. Cassandra’s struggles were real, and really debilitating. She shared that there were many times that she did not see a future in her future. That changed when she met Balou and Sierra. Her equine partners helped her find peace and purpose in life. Today she is preparing to graduate from Cardinal Newman and making plans for college and a life filled with promise and possibility.
The transformational growth and learning that I have had the opportunity to witness watching our kids grow up and into their potential, though at times seemingly painful and dark, is now as bright as their future. Both Jon and Cassandra credit our program for helping them to find their way.
As our conversation was nearing its end, I wanted to know if they had any questions for me. Jon did. He wanted to know why? "Why are you so determined to rebuild and bring the programs back?” he asked. That was easy I said. "Because of you."
Horses change kids. Kids change the world. The Pony Express has been making a difference in the lives of horses and humans for nearly forty years. It is our passion and purpose. We hope to continue for another forty years. I know we will. Because of you. Thank you!
