A Message from the MPL Friends & Foundation
As we wrap-up our successful June Membership drive, our Library is making plans to reopen later in July, after 16 months of closure and we are filled with optimism. To our current Friends, thank you for answering the call— this year in particular, a year of so much need. Thanks to the MPL Friends, our Library has remained a vital source of lifelong learning in our community, even when the building was closed.
If you have never joined the Friends before, or if your membership has lapsed, please take a moment now and join us today. As a loyal MPL Friend, you receive free or discounted admission to our Friends & Foundation programs, early-bird access to used book sales, and weekly access to shop our used books. You’ll be first to hear about events and volunteer opportunities. Soon we’ll be inviting Friends behind the scenes with “insider” tours at the Library.
Together, we ensure that lifelong learning flourishes in our community. We can’t do it without YOU!

Celebrate Independence on July 4th
Monterey Public Library will be closed on Monday, July 5.
The US of A turns 245 years old this year! Normally, we throw ourselves a party, but we're still on the mend from Covid. Festivities in the City of Monterey are canceled this year, but Colton Hall - where the California Consitution began - will be open from 10:00 am to 4:00 (see more below. Pacific Grove will have a celebration downtown with live music and kids activities (11:00 am-3:00 pm), and Carmel is hosting Monterey County Pops! orchestra playing a variety of music in Devendorf Park at 2:00 pm. No public fireworks are planned in Monterey County, and please remember the fire danger if you have fireworks at home. Call us at (831) 646-3933 or visit www.monterey.org/library if you'd like to put any patriotic books on hold for the holiday.
Colton Hall Museum Reopens July 1
The City of Monterey’s Museums & Cultural Arts Division is excited to announce the reopening of Colton Hall! Considered one of the most historic buildings in California, Colton Hall is the birth place of the State of California.
Home of the California Constitutional Convention of 1849, visit the site where 48 delegates debated the decisions that made California a free state. See original documents, artifacts, and even walk on the same floor as the delegates. Starting Thursday July 1, the Colton Hall Museum will be open Thursdays-Sundays from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. Located at 570 Pacific St., Monterey, Colton Hall Museum is located upstairs with an ADA accessible elevator and parking available in the rear. For questions, please call
(831) 646-5648, or email [email protected].
Learn About Our World
Among the resources at Monterey Public Library is a collection of "CultureGrams" in a ProQuest database we have for patrons. These are fascinating looks at the cultures of world nations, including languages, fashions, foods, recreation, geography, politics, famous citizens, and many colorful photos. There are even descriptions for every US state and Canadian province. It's always good to know something about our global community (not just for a book report!) so check out CultureGrams under the Research menu on our main webpage.
