With a renewed focus on funding transportation infrastructure, the future is bright for those interested in joining the construction inspection field. The first step to becoming a construction inspector is to become pre-qualified to work on projects with the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT). You can achieve this by completing their web-based, 12-module training program. Completing these trainings now will allow you to quickly be assigned to projects as they arise during this construction season or next construction season.

To view the 12 Construction Inspection Training Modules, in the left hand navigation panel

type "TCI" in the "Course Search" box type and then click the blue "Go" button.

To help you complete the modules and become pre-qualified with PennDOT, we have put together an overview of each module, learning objectives, and the recording length. You can complete the modules in any order, however below is our recommended order based on subject matter and project sequence.

Time Commitment

It will take a little over five hours to complete all 12 training module recordings. Please budget an additional 5 to 10 minutes per module to complete the required quiz questions. The modules are self-paced independent study, so you can complete as many or as few as your schedule allows. Note: If you do not pass the module quiz with a score of 80% or higher, you will need to complete the entire module again and re-take the quiz.

Tips for Success

Review the learning objectives and take notes throughout the module.
Pay attention to lists of items or steps.
Quiz questions may ask you to select "all that apply." Carefully read the question before submiting your answer.

Next Steps to Obtain Certification

Upon successful completion of each module quiz (a score of 80% or higher), you will need to take a screen capture or cell phone picture of the quiz results. Additional instructions are provided at the end of the Inspection Overview module (#1).

Whether taking screen captures or using your cell phone, please keep track of the files, as you will need to submit all 12 to be verified and obtain certification.

Once you have passed all 12 training modules, you have two options:

Email Brian Hansel

Email Brian Hansel of RIG. Brian will send the screen captures/pictures to PennDOT on your behalf and update RIG's records that you are now pre-qualified for future construction inspection opportunities.

Email PennDOT

Email your screen captures/pictures directly to PennDOT. You will also need to e-mail RIG separately to let us know you have completed the modules.
