Children's History Camp
WHAT: Shadows-on-the-Teche Children's History Camp

WHEN: June 12 - 16, 2017 from 9 a.m. - 3 p.m..

WHERE: Shadows-on-the-Teche, 317 E. Main St., New Iberia, La.

DETAILS:
Campers have engaged in many activities at the Shadows-on-the-Teche History Camp which gives them a glimpse of what life might have been like in New Iberia in the 1800s.

Daily life consisted of a series of tasks which had to be completed each day, hauling water from cisterns, gathering eggs and feeding animals. The town's people looked forward to exciting events which interrupted the monotony of daily work. One of those events included the arrival of a circus in town. In 1855 and 1856, wagons brought animals (menagerie), performers and side shows to New Iberia. Later in the 1870 through the 1890s, the circus arrived by railroad, including the biggest circus of the time, Barnum and Bailey which also hosted a wild west show.

Campers will explore games, crafts and activities which focus on a circus theme throughout the week. This five-day camp for children ages 6-11 will be held Monday, June 12 through Friday, June 16, 2017 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day.

Campers will experience seven different activities based on this year's theme, "Grand Circus in Town." The week will culminate with campers' performance inside the Shadows Visitor Center on Friday afternoon.  Campers' parents and family are invited to attend.

An admission fee of $125 covers costs for the camp. A limited number of participants will be accepted (35 campers). Participants will continue to be accepted until all of these spaces are filled. Families should send in applications with a check to confirm the young person's registration by May 20.
