Happy and Blessed Eastertide

A blessed and joyful Easter season to all our parishioners and friends, from Msgr. Jameson and all the priests, deacons and staff of St. Matthew's Cathedral. Congratulations to the 25 people who celebrated Sacraments of Initiation and were welcomed into the Church at the Easter Vigil!

Check out the extensive coverage of the Easter Vigil in the Catholic Standard and in El Pregonero with a photo gallery capturing the celebration of Baptism, First Eucharist and Confirmation by our elect, candidates and catechumens.

Catholic Standard also published a Lenten series, "Easter Journeys of Faith," that includes an interview with Rachel Lincoln, one of the elect who entered the Church at the Cathedral's Easter Vigil.

Please pray for our 25 brothers and sisters in Christ as they continue their journeys of faith.

Read Pope Francis' Message for this year's Easter Sunday Urbi et Orbi blessing ("for the City and for the World").

Thank You from the Rector

National Eucharistic Revival

This year, the U.S. bishops are sponsoring a National Eucharistic Revival. The aim is to kindle love for the Risen Jesus in the Eucharist and revitalize the Catholic people’s participation in Sunday Mass. To this end, we present brief weekly meditations on the Eucharist until the Solemnity of Corpus Christi, June 2, 2024.

From the writings of Brian Robinette

Brian Robinette, Grammars of Resurrection: A Christian Theology of Presence and Absence (2)

The church must live eucharistically. “The cup of blessing that we bless, is it not a sharing in the blood of Christ? The bread that we break, is it not a sharing in the body of Christ? Because there is one bread, we who are many are one body, for we all partake of the one bread” (1 Cor. 10:16–17). In the communal celebration of the Eucharist, the presencing/absencing Spirit of the risen Christ forms a corporate personality out of its individual communicants — forms a constituted body or “complex person.”66 This happens at all levels. “It is performed,” writes Ward, “through the reception, the eating, the digestion of the elements: the physiological absorption of the one Body of Christ within the body of the believer, so that the two become one flesh.” The Eucharist brings about a “complex corporeality,” or a “transcorporeality.” The Eucharist signifies the mutual subsistence of bodies in a most remarkable way. The wine and bread are symbols of the earth’s nourishing bounty as food and drink. Our relationship to the earth is one of dependence. We hunger. We thirst. The earth provides, yielding itself in the fruit of grain and grape. But bread and wine also reflect human activity. They come to be through human ingenuity, through techne. Hand and instrument plow, knead, prepare, break, and serve. Hand and instrument gather, press, store, bless, and pour. We do not just eat; we humanize what we eat. Bread and wine are “humanized nature,” symbols of the creative interaction between cosmos and anthropos. These are the gifts we bring to the altar: the gifts of the earth, the gifts of our labor, the gifts of ourselves. And because this altar is also a table, the Eucharist is a meal sharing. It is a communal event, a microcosm of the social macrocosm. The Eucharist institutes communitas, even if, at times, its celebration brings inequities within the human community, and the ecclesia more particularly, to light (1 Cor. 11:20–22).
