Be part of our story

During this Christmas season we joyfully share our koliada, or carol, with you – our donors, partners, and all who are passionate about our Ukrainian culture in Canada.

Through the generosity of our donors, the Shevchenko Foundation funds the community organizations and artists that tell our Canadian story with a Ukrainian twist. Although the year continued to pose its challenges, we are very proud to have supported a wide range of projects and initiatives in the arts, education, heritage preservation, and community development – including our Christmas card. Thank you and congratulations to illustrator Kathryn Durst and animator Marichka Marczyk!

In this season of giving, I invite you to become part of our story by supporting our annual Koliada Campaign. There are many ways to donate but please remember – donations must reach us no later than December 31 to be eligible for a 2021 tax receipt.

We’re counting on you to help us share the countless great Canadian stories!

Wishing you and yours a Merry Christmas and may the new year be healthy, prosperous, and abound with creativity!

Христос Раждається! Славімо Його!

Illustrator inspired by folk traditions

Kathryn Durst

Kathryn Durst is a Canadian illustrator inspired by folk art and traditions.  A summer folk camp organized by the Toronto-based Kosa Kolektiv and subsequently its annual koliada inspired her Woodland Carollers featured on this year’s card. One of Kathryn’s most recent projects involved an exciting collaboration with Sir Paul McCartney who selected Kathryn to illustrate his best-selling children’s books.

How would your story end?

We would like you to help us write a Canadian ending to the Ukrainian folk tale Rukavychka. In our version, the animals in the folk tale go carolling and meet the animals adorning our Christmas card. What happens next? Write the ending in 2-250 words – but no more! The original tale (courtesy of illustrator Olha Tkachenko) and all the details are at the link below. Unleash your creativity – have some fun!

Design our commemorative bookmark

Annually during the month of March, the work of internationally renowned poet and Ukrainian national bard Taras Shevchenko takes centre stage.

It has been a long-standing tradition of the Shevchenko Foundation to celebrate the work of Taras Shevchenko by producing a bookmark featuring a unique artwork based on a pre-selected poem. Thousands of copies of the annual bookmark are distributed at no cost as educational tools to children across Canada.

The successful artist will receive $1,000 for the original artwork.

Don't miss this opportunity to broaden your exposure. Deadline: January 17, 2022
