Racial Reconciliation:
Listen, Learn, and Love

Thanks to each and every one of you who are walking this journey of racial reconciliation with us at Grace Church. During the month of August, we continued to listen to personal stories of racial discrimination and discussed the daily reality of being black in America as told by Austin Channing Brown in her book, I'm Still Here.

This month, we will focus our learning on the justice system and mass incarceration through the work of Bryan Stevenson, the founder and executive director of the Equal Justice Initiative. Stevenson is a widely acclaimed public interest lawyer who has dedicated his career to helping the poor, the incarcerated, and the condemned.

For the Month of September

O God, you made us in your own image and redeemed us through Jesus your Son: Look with compassion on the whole human family; take away the arrogance and hatred which infect our hearts; break down the walls that separate us; unite us in bonds of love; and work through our struggle and confusion to accomplish your purposes on earth; that, in your good time, all nations and races may serve you in harmony around your heavenly throne; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Just Mercy by Bryan Stevenson

Bryan Stevenson's TED talk, We Need to Talk about Injustice.

In an engaging and personal talk -- with cameo appearances from his grandmother and Rosa Parks -- Stevenson shares some hard truths about America's justice system, starting with a massive imbalance along racial lines: a third of the country's black male population has been incarcerated at some point in their lives. These issues, which are wrapped up in America's unexamined history, are rarely talked about with this level of candor, insight and persuasiveness. - TED
