No Mow May resources

No Mow May is a quick and catchy name for a movement that aims far beyond not mowing the yard for a month. It’s more than long grass and dandelion blooms. It’s a gateway to understanding how we share our lawns with many small creatures.

Is your community participating in No Mow May? Are you getting a lot of questions? Below are a number of resources to help you with this popular, yet complex trend.

Great Southeast Pollinator Census

The Great Southeast Pollinator Census, formerly known as the Great Georgia Pollinator Census, is back and now includes Georgia, South Carolina, and North Carolina.

This wonderful community science project created by University of Georgia will be held on Friday, August 18 and Saturday, August 19. Learn more about the Great Southeast Pollinator Census

If you are in North Carolina, and want to learn about how to participate, the Census will be holding a webinar on Wednesday, June 7, 1:30 pm - 3:00 pm ET. Learn about the Census, how to participate in the Census, and how to bring the Census to your community or organizations. Webinar Registration

New Mexico grant opportunity: up to $100,000 per award

Reminder: our friends at the Carroll Petrie Foundation in Santa Fe have created a new grant to support existing and prospective Bee City and Bee Campus affiliates in New Mexico. Feel free to spread the word!

This grant can be used to help habitat projects, outreach efforts, trainings and technical support, and reducing pesticide use.

View the request for proposals (RFP) on Petrie's website.

To qualify, grantees must explicitly avoid the cosmetic and prophylactic use of pesticides in their Integrated Pest Management (IPM) plan and become a Bee City or Bee Campus, if they are not already an affiliate.

  • Applications are open through Oct. 1, 2023 and will be evaluated on a rolling basis
  • Up to $100,000 per award
  • $1,000,000 total available funding
  • Up to 25 grants will be awarded
  • Grant awards will be divided into two equal payments over two years

Not in New Mexico? We encourage you to approach local foundations in your state to see if they want to create a similar grant!

Allies In Conservation: Nurseries Practicing Pollinator-Safe Pest Management

Bright pink cosmos with a yellow, striped bee on the yellow center.

Do you love to shop for plants? Then you may know that nurseries are crucial allies in the quest to expand pollinator habitat. After all, these are the businesses who grow what we plant in our yards and parks. Their decisions and skills greatly influence whether pollinators can access high-quality forage in gardens, parks, and restoration areas—and whether that forage is free of harmful pesticides. Read more
