OCTOBER NEWS
Each day we welcome at least one member who hasn’t been here since March. It’s a real treat to see so many more of you coming through our doors and enjoying a good workout while reconnecting with old gym and swim buddies and carefully adhering to our new guidelines. So glad to have you back.

A warm welcome also to our new members who discovered our beautiful natatorium and well-maintained fitness facilities. It is such a pleasure to have new people at the Beede Center.
DATES TO REMEMBER

  • October 17 - Nick Ressler Blood Drive
  • October 25 - Trunk or Treat
OTTERLY ADORABLE!
Our youth swim team is among the many programs running this fall.

WHEN'S A QUIET TIME TO...
… book a treadmill, reserve a swim lane, use the strength room? These are questions we frequently receive. The answers, however, are not so easy. Each day we see a new face, whether it’s a member who hasn’t been here since March or someone altogether new to the Beede Center. So patterns are evolving.

Keep in mind weather plays a huge role in attendance. Fewer members come to the gym in beautiful weather. Also, members cancel so it’s always a good idea to return to concordrec.myrec.com and see if your desired spot has been released.

Here are "generally" the best times to reserve:

WEEKDAYS (11 exercise time slots)
  • Double Lap Lane - late afternoon
  • Single Lap Lane - evening
  • Dive Well Lane - prior to the end of the school day
  • Shallow End - good availability
  • Therapy Pool - early morning/evening
  • Children’s Pool - good availability
  • Strength Room - late afternoons are very quiet
  • Cardio Equipment - good availability

WEEKENDS (7 exercise time slots)
  • Double Lap Lane - early morning and end of day
  • Single Lap Lane - end of day
  • Dive Well Lane - end of day
  • Shallow End - good availability
  • Therapy Pool - late morning and end of day
  • Children’s Pool - good availability
  • Strength Room - good availability
  • Cardio Equipment - good availability
GOOD PROTOCALS CONTINUES
Locker rooms remain open for changing clothes and using the restroom areas. Storage, showering and blow dryers are still not permitted. The gray bins are working wonderfully for your personal storage.
We suggest wearing a warm hat for the ride home as the temps go down and the wind blows.

Look at this smart Beede member!
IMPROVEMENTS KEEP COMING
As always, we continue to evolve as necessary. We will alert you of any changes via our press releases that are emailed to every household and posted at beedecenter.com. Many thanks to all who responded to our recent survey. We wasted no time implementing your excellent recommendations. Here they are:

  • After arriving for your booked exercise time block, you can check with the front desk attendant about using other unbooked areas of the Beede Center. Cross-training on the same day!
  • Registration for exercise time blocks begin at 7:00pm versus 9:00pm.
  • Deadline to register for an exercise time block remains at one hour before desired time. As an example, if you wish to reserve a treadmill for Monday at 3:00pm, you may begin at 7:00pm the Friday before and register anytime up until Monday at 2:00pm.
  • We have increased the number of single lanes from 3 to 4, and made them available only for members 18 years and older. Double lanes have decreased from 6 to 5.
Charter member John Wild was among the first through our doors when we reopened July 6.
Three months back into his routine and getting stronger everyday.
SOMETHING CAME UP
Happens to everyone. If you need to cancel or change your reservation please email the Beede Center front desk at poolreception@concordma.gov or call 978-287-1000 as soon as possible. The sooner you let us know, the sooner we can put your reservation back out for another member to select.
GIVE YOURSELF A BREAK
Our fall programs are running strong. More than 200 of you are enjoying classes from Arthritis, to Master Swimming to Otters, our youth swim team. It is heartwarming to see so many of you reconnecting with former “classmates” from past Beede sessions. We appreciate your Social Distancing and all other Covid protocols you’re practicing in class and out. We are off to a great start!
Coach Maureen Cownie’s Water PE class is off to an excellent start. Middle schoolers play games, have fun and burn off plenty of energy every Wednesday at 1:45 in our Dive Well. There is one spot left for the season!
HONORING A FINE YOUNG MAN
The Beede Center is honored to host the annual Nick Ressler Blood Drive on Saturday, October 17 from 8:00am to 1:00pm The Drive is in memory of Nick Ressler, son of members Pam and Paul Ressler. Nick was 14 in 2001 when he was diagnosed with terminal cancer.

Pam, Paul and their two daughters were grateful for the many blood transfusions that extended his short life, so they could have more time as a family. In gratitude, the Resslers have organized a Blood Drive with Massachusetts General Hospital every year since Nick’s passing, allowing other families and patients the precious gift of time.

The Blood Drive was originally scheduled for April to coincide with Nick’s birthday, but has been moved because of the pandemic. MGH will send two Blood Mobiles to the Beede Center to ensure social distancing. Appointments are required. No walk-ins. Your half hour and pint of blood will provide life and happiness to a very sick person and their loved ones.

Make a reservation here nickresslerblooddrive@gmail.com. You must be 16 to donate or have your parent’s or caregiver’s permission. Please call 617-726-8177 with questions.
