‘Go to the grave where friends are laid and learn how quickly mortals fade,
Learn how the fairest flower must droop, learn how the strongest form must stoop,
Learn that we are but dust and clay, the short-liv'd creatures of a day.’
Nathaniel Hawthorne
Welcome to October, the most exciting month of the year. Did you know that creative Concordians, from Nathaniel Hawthorne and Louisa May Alcott in the nineteenth century to Gregory Maguire and Alice Hoffman in this century, have been major contributors to the Halloween scene?
We’re going to spice up our content with excerpts from their works, some of which you may be familiar with, such as “Wicked,” by Gregory, and “Practical Magic,” by Alice.
After thoroughly verifying all authors’ credentials, we decided that if they are good enough to write the Great American Novel, stand out on the NYT bestseller list, Broadway and Hollywood, then they’re good enough for the Beede newsletter. We don’t just let anyone be quoted here.
We’ve got a lot to cover from road races to Halloween fun, so let the magic begin!

BEEDE & BOOKS CONTINUES
Adored children’s librarian Fiona Stephenson is back with another bag of fun tricks for this month’s segment of Beede & Books. Her stories about Halloween and autumn days will be accompanied by song-singing preschoolers in our lobby on Monday, October 7th at 11:00am
After a half hour of interactive literature, children and their adult caregivers head off to the kiddie pool for an enjoyable segue into a Monday afternoon.
There is no charge for this event, co-sponsored by the Concord Free Public Library. If we reach our capacity limits, we will divide the group into two, with one reading first and the other playing in the pool. All preschoolers and their adult caregivers are welcome. Don’t forget towels!!!
The next two segments are Mondays, November 4 and December 2, also from 11:00am-12:00pm

‘Sometimes, running away means you're headed in the exact right direction.’
A QUICK RUN THROUGH CONCORD HISTORY
Is there a better way to get into the Halloween spirit than a sprint (or sensible jog) through historical Sleepy Hollow Cemetery? We don’t think so, either, witch - we mean which - is why we’re bringing back the Sleepy Hollow 5K & Fun Run!
Yes, air out those gorilla and cape-crusader costumes for another run past the haunts of Emerson, Thoreau and the Alcotts, to name only a few of Sleepy Hollow’s permanent residents. All ages and abilities are encouraged to show up by 10:00am on Saturday, October 26.
Race times will be digitized at the finish. The top female and male runners of each division will be presented awards. All Fun Runners receive a race medal. Check out the map and pre-register
here.
If you can’t make it, we have a list of upcoming running events in the area at the end of this newsletter.
THIS EVENT IS WEATHER DEPENDENT.
PLEASE CHECK OUR WEBSITE THAT DAY IF YOU THINK IT MAY BE CANCELLED.

‘My darling girl, when are you going to realize that being normal is not necessarily a virtue?
It rather denotes a lack of courage.’

IT PAYS TO BELONG
Did you know that most major health insurance plans will deduct $150 from your premium if you belong to a gym? Many of you don’t realize you have free cash waiting for you.
It’s easy to access. You usually only need a receipt from us proving that you have belonged here for a minimum of four consecutive months. Some plans request an attendance form. Some even allow you to go back a few years and collect what you didn’t know about.
We’re happy to provide you with whatever you need to streamline the process and put that $150 back in your pocket, where it belongs. Check your insurance company’s website for details, then let us know how we can help you.

‘It’s the age of daring. It’s the only time we have.
We must live in the present. We are young and alive.’

IT OTTER BE ANOTHER GOOD SEASON
We are so happy the Otters started their 2019-2020 season on September 30. Each year this youth swim program gets more exciting, featuring kids from Concord, Carlisle and all the surrounding towns.
Under the tutelage of Head Coach Maureen Cownie, the kids learn all four strokes and valuable teammate lessons. Otters compete with other teams, and many go on to promising careers in high school and college. Otters develop strong friendships with fellow waterbugs...maybe even swimmers for life.

CHANNELING ALL CHALLENGERS
Head Lifeguard Mark Ryder has customized The Alenuihaha Channel - which is in Hawaii - into a duathlon. Our version is a 26-mile run/walk along the scenic Haleakala National Park, and a 26-mile swim from The Big Island to Maui. Alenuihaha, roughly translates to “of very large, trough-like waves.” We promise few such waves in our lap pool, so this challenge is easier than it sounds. (Editor’s note: Mark says it translates to: “I’ll end you! Ha Ha!” which is somewhat intimidating.) Good news, you don’t have to complete all 52 miles at once. You can log your cumulative distances from September 30 through December 31. Walking your dog or strolling with your bestie? That distance counts, too. Essentially, Mark has made it impossible for you to lose.
Signup is free at the front desk and on the wall near the Therapy Pool. It may seem overwhelming at first, and while you’re in the middle you’ll wonder what you got yourself into. But in the end, you’ll feel great and appreciate the thrill of a challenge. Aloha!
