A Message From the Box Office Manager: A Season of Gratitude and Anticipation

Dear Esteemed Patrons,

As we draw the curtains on another remarkable season at our beloved theatre, I find myself reflecting with immense gratitude on the journey that has unfolded. Allow me to introduce myself as your new Box Office Manager, humbled and exhilarated to have embarked on this theatrical adventure with each and every one of you.

From the bustling pre-show excitement to the hushed anticipation as lights dimmed, every moment spent in the heart of our theater has been a treasure. Your unwavering support and enthusiasm have truly made this debut season a joyous and memorable experience.

As we approach the grand finale of our current season, I extend a heartfelt invitation to join us for the uproarious comedy "Exit Laughing." It promises to be an evening filled with laughter, camaraderie, and the magic of live performance—a fitting culmination to our season's journey together.

Looking ahead, I eagerly anticipate the wonders that the next season will bring. With a repertoire brimming with promise and excitement, I am thrilled to continue our shared love of theatre. Together, let us embark on yet another season of theatrical enchantment, where every performance is a new adventure waiting to unfold.

Once again, I extend my deepest gratitude to each member of our cherished audience. Your presence and support have been the cornerstone of our success, and I am profoundly grateful for the privilege of serving you in this role.

With warm regards and anticipation for the seasons to come,

Linda Kloorfain

Director Spotlight

"I've lived through many uncertainties in my three decades on Earth.

Entertainment and journalism have been comforting and reaffirming to me in equal measure. I've loved filmmaking since I was a kid in the pre-Y2K era. The music of Peter Gabriel and David Bowie helped me move past 9/11 and the grave injustices felt in its wake. More than anything, I consider myself a man of peace but there needs to be resonant conflict on stage for a show to work.

I studied filmmaking and mock trial in Xaverian High School during the Occupy Wall Street protests. I translated those experiences, societal and technical, to the stage in my downtime while studying Chemistry at St. Francis College. I got by after I graduated, taking the odd gig playing in bands and acting even through the ravages of COVID when I was still in New York City. Even then, I always felt astray from the large schools of fish you'd think of when swimming in that big of a pond.

I believe everything from the lightest comedies to the bleakest black-box fare requires an adept touch to connect with its audience. You get used to how they and the cast/crew can react: from guffaws of admiration to retorts of hatred. The only thing that marks failure is indifference. That shaped my performances and backstage work since, and I'm grateful to have brought that to the Pineapple Playhouse since the start of 2023.

Taking the directorship for this year's One-Acts festival made me feel young again, even if that exuberance has to be tempered with knowing the questions posed in the two shorts I'm helming, Rescue Mission and The Strand that Beads You, are still very real and current.

I dedicate Strand to the memory of Nex Benedict, who died February 2, as well as my fellow schoolmate Enrique L. Rios, Jr. Rios is among the 49 slain at the Pulse Nightclub on June 12, 2016. These and many other unwarranted deaths in the LGBTQ+ community pushed me into the director's chair wholeheartedly."

When the biggest highlight in your life for the past 30 years has been your weekly bridge night out with the "girls," what do you do when one of your foursomes inconveniently dies? If you're Connie, Leona and Millie, three southern ladies from Birmingham, you do the most daring thing you've ever done. You "borrow" the ashes from the funeral home for one last card game, and the wildest, most exciting night of your lives involves a police raid, a stripper and a whole new way of looking at all the fun you can have when you're truly living.

History of the Theatre

"The Jury Room" at the Pineapple Playhouse in 2001

Twelve jurors gather to decide the innocence or guilt of a young girl. Did she stab her uncle in cold blood? Eleven jurors say yes; one, a student actress, says no. The jurors agree to her request to re-enact the crime right there. Props are brought in - including the actual murder weapon...
