A Message From a Board Member...
Dear Esteemed Patrons,
The Pineapple Playhouse box office has been bustling in the latter half of the 2023-2024 season. 'The Best Christmas Pageant Ever', 'Play On!' and 'Crimes of the Heart' all set records for ticket sales. And it looks like 'Exit Laughing' ticket sales are strong. I thought the sets designed by Pineapple Playhouse board president, Josef Long, for 'Play On!' were stunning but I took a peek at 'Exit Laughing’s' set and he has somehow outdone himself.
After this season ends, board of trustee member and veteran Pineapple director, Jack Krantz will be tackling ‘The Mountaintop’ by Katori Hall. This beautiful drama is a fictional depiction of Martin Luther King Jr.'s last night on earth set entirely in Room 306 of the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tennessee on the eve of his assassination in 1968. The Mountaintop will run from June 7-16. The next season begins in September with the hilarious comedy 'Drinking Habits' directed by Patricia Holerger.
Personally, I couldn’t be more thrilled to have discovered the Pineapple Playhouse after my wife and I relocated to Florida to care for her 101-year-old mom. I was fortunate to land the opening for a director of ‘Crimes of the Heart’ and even luckier to find three actors who had never appeared onstage at the Pineapple to play the lead roles of the Magrath sisters. I was flattered by the dozens of five star google reviews many patrons posted- many of whom had come to the theater for the first time.
I look forward to next season’s lineup and the opportunity to direct again. I chose ‘Doubt- A Parable’ by John Patrick Stanley which in 2005 won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama and the Tony Award for Best Play. Meryl Streep and Philip Seymour Hoffman starred in the film of the play, and it is currently running on Broadway starring Liev Schreiber. It’s the lone drama in the Pineapple season.
Josef will be directing two comedies again- Vanya and Sasha and Marsha and Spike by Christopher Durang and Ken Ludwig’s ‘The Fox and the Fairway’. Other shows next season will include ‘Squabbles’ by Marshall Karp directed by Gale Baker and Heidi Condon will be directing a musical titled ‘I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change’ by Joe DiPietro. The board hopes you are as excited for these shows as we are.

Heidi moved to the Treasure Coast in 2004 from the New England area. She was involved with many theatrical endeavors in the Boston and North Shore area. She performed at The Medieval Manor for 9 years and was a director and an award-winning actress for community and professional (Equity) theaters. In addition to that, she was the lead singer for an eleven-piece show band for 15 years, opening for several well-known artists. That is how she met Bill, her husband of 40 years.
Since moving to Florida, she has acted and directed at several theaters such as The Lyric Theater, The Treasure Coast Theater, The Barn, ACT, StarStruck, and The Florida Renaissance Festival where she was also the Assistant Entertainment Director. She was the Director and curriculum writer of The Lyric Theater Awesome Summer Camp and directed an original play there in 2019. She will again be directing an original play, “Panned,” at The Lyric in early August of 2024. In her spare time, she is a pet-sitter and volunteers for the American Bullmastiff Rescue.
This season at The Pineapple Playhouse she is directing “I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change,” which is a musical comedy with book and lyrics by Joe DiPietro, and music by Jimmy Roberts. It is the second-longest running Off-Broadway musical. It is presented in the form of a series of vignettes connected by the central theme of love and relationships. A first date, for example, comes before scenes dealing with marriage, and then onto scenes dealing with childbearing and progress into the mature years of love. Despite the large number of characters, the show can be done with a small number of actors or an extended cast. The show is hilarious and well written. We hope to see you at the auditions or in the audience!

Squabbles
aka Your House or Mine
by Marshall karp
Feb. 14 - March 2
This hilarious play pits a father in law against a mother in a comedic succession of squabbles. Jerry Sloan is a successful writer of advertising jingles married to an equally successful lawyer. Living with the happy couple is the not so happy Abe Dreyfus, Jerry's curmudgeon of a father in law. Abe is a funny guy to the audience, not to Jerry. The situation is exacerbated when Jerry's mother Mildred looses her house in a fire and needs a place to stay. Abe and Mildred can't stand each other. This play is one hilarious confrontation after another until the heart warming finale in which the oldsters discover that, really, each is not so bad.

"Wake Up, Darling"
by Alex Gottlieb
Directed by Neil Gawlak, Dec. 1980
A comedy concerning Polly Emerson, a pretty young thing who wants to be an actress. Polly's husband, Don, is a successful advertising man, who yearns to be a playwright and has a shelf of unproduced plays to his credit. Don understandably isn't too happy when Polly comes home with Deerfield Prescot, a very young guy who has written Broadway's next musical hit—or so he tells Polly and Don. He's decided that Polly is just the person to star in his show, so Polly's life, and consequently Don's, is taken over by Deerfield, who moves into their apartment to put the finishing touches to his masterpiece. Gloria, a chum of Polly's and a beautiful divorcee, arrives at the same time, and there's an interfering maid (called Juliet) ever present, not to mention Don's secretary, Martha, who's disillusioned with life and men. This assorted cast of characters raises havoc with Polly's and Don's life, much to the delight of the audience, and it isn't until a Vassar girl named Penelope arrives on the scene that Deerfield is properly straightened out. He and Penelope leave in pursuit of happiness; Gloria leaves in pursuit of her next husband; and Polly and Don, alone at last, decide to concentrate on their coming baby rather than a play. All is quiet, peace reigns, when still another visitor appears to take over the household—Don's mother-in-law!
