Behind the Scenes of Collections Department
|
Here’s a glimpse of what is happening behind the scenes. Our Collections Department recently purchased four 3-tiered saddle stands to help protect the collection and to help free up space in the collections vault. Staff and volunteer Jan Devereaux worked to make mounts and covers for the saddles. |
In the photograph below, Collections Assistant Eric Richard updates the New Acquisitions exhibit in the Museum lobby to hold:
- George W. Baylor's Violin
- Lone Ranger Trading Cards
- U.S. Congressional Resolution.
Come see these artifacts on your next visit.

- Baylor was born August 2, 1832, in Fort Gibson, Indian Territory. In 1845, his family moved to Texas and later, through the influence of his uncle Robert Baylor, he attended Baylor University at Independence, Texas before its move to Waco. Gold fever took him to California in 1854. According to family letters, George could not find steady employment or strike it rich in the gold fields. Before returning to Texas he purchased a violin which he kept until his death in 1916.

- Artist Todd A. Smith donated two cards depicting Clayton Moore as the Lone Ranger and Jay Silverheels as Tonto. Smith has been illustrating for the Topps Trading Cards company since 2011. He is most well-known for his photo realistic sketches of current and former baseball players as part of the Topps Sketch Series of baseball cards.
| - In March U.S. Congressman Pete Sessions and U.S. Senator Ted Cruz sponsored resolutions recognizing and honoring the Texas Rangers for their 200 years of service. A signed original was donated by Laura Greenwood who secured the resolutions.

May Is Get Caught Reading Month
Audrey Ladd, the Educational Programs Manager at the Texas Ranger Hall of Fame and Museum, presented the children's book Courageous People from Texas Who Changed the World by Heidi Poelman with some visitors at the May "Story Time and Crafts Day." We couldn't resist sharing this cute collage picture from Waco McLennan County Library. The Story Time and Craft Days will return in the Fall after our summer program Texas Ranger Talks.
Texas FBI National Academy Associates
In April, several FBI National Academy graduates and guests gathered in Houston to discuss how the Texas Rangers collaborate and assist their partners in law enforcement. Texas Ranger Chief Jason Taylor presented. It’s always a pleasure to see so many exceptional professionals together.
Orlando Salinas Receives Award
Texas DPS had the privilege of recognizing several members of the department for their outstanding work and service at the April Public Safety Commission Meeting. Please join us as we congratulate Program Specialist Orlando Salinas, Texas Rangers Division – Headquarters, on receiving the William P. Clements Excellence Award. This award is named in honor of the former governor and his commitment to excellence in government. The award honors a commissioned and non-commissioned employee for the exceptional performance of their duties throughout the course of their DPS careers.
When asked what receiving this award means to him, Salinas said, “I am truly honored to be recognized and to receive the William P. Clements Award. This award is definitely a reflection of the hard work and excellence of my co-workers and DPS leadership. We work together each day as a team to serve the citizens of Texas. I also want to thank my wife and my family for supporting me throughout my career at DPS.”
Tivy High School Students Named "Junior Rangers" | Several dozen students at Tivy High School took an oath in May from local Texas Ranger Chad Matlock and became “Junior Texas Rangers.” Following the oath-taking ceremony in the school’s theater, the students received gold badges. | Anthony Brooks, left, has his Junior Texas Ranger badge pinned on by local Texas Ranger Chad Matlock at a ceremony at Tivy High School. Brooks, a sophomore at Tivy, is a student in the school’s Functional Living Class. | The event was organized by local resident Laura Greenwood, who serves on the advisory board of the Texas Ranger Museum. Greenwood, a regular substitute teacher in the FLU classroom at Tivy, believes the history of the Rangers is important for all citizens to appreciate.
In May, Sheriff Marr attended the flag dedication ceremony marking the Bicentennial Anniversary of the establishment of the Texas Rangers. The event was held in the 1967 Courthouse. We encourage you to check out these flags at 115 N Bridge St, Victoria, TX 77901.
Pictured are (L-R) local Ranger John Lingle, Victoria Police Chief Chuck Young, Sheriff Marr, local Ranger Drew Pilkington and “Co. F” Lt. Richard Henderson.
