Inside the Making of LBJ: Triumph & Tragedy
|
Before LBJ: Triumph & Tragedy premieres this Sunday at 8PM CT on CNN, learn more about what it took to produce the series! Did you know that many moments from LBJ: Triumph & Tragedy were filmed in central Texas, including the LBJ Ranch!
The series director Pat Kondelis reflected on how he and his team were able to capture Lyndon Johnson and his legacy in this 4-part series:
We were incredibly lucky that LBJ recorded so many of his conversations while in office.
This allowed us to put LBJ’s voice front and center throughout the documentary, allowing the audience to essentially experience LBJ’s strategies and thought process on some of the most significant pieces of legislation in America’s history.
But how does one capture the essence of Lyndon Johnson's presidency without the man himself? Recreations! Recreations! Recreations! Pat recently gave some insight into that process:
The recreations are critical in telling the story. We have so much of LBJ's voice in these recordings, which is great, but what are you going to do for the visuals while the recordings play?
Instead of simply doing graphics with subtitles we opted to recreate the exact locations where LBJ would have had these conversations. In some cases, we were able to put our actor in the exact spot the real conversation happened.
For example, there is a call between President Johnson and Dr. King regarding the Watts Riots and President Johnson was working from the LBJ Ranch when that call was recorded. We were granted permission to put our actor inside the LBJ ranch, in LBJ's actual office, standing at his real desk to recreate that amazing call.

FUTURE FORUM | FEB 23, 2022 12:00PM - 1:00PM

Last month the Greater Austin Crime Commission released a study recommending that Austin hire over 100 more police officers. In 2021 Austin’s homicide rate was the highest it had been since at least 1960, and 2-3 times the rate from recent years. On September 1, a new Texas law went into effect punishing cities that cut police budgets.
What does this all mean for criminal justice in Texas and Austin specifically?
Please join us on February 23 to hear from subject matter experts including:
Assistant Chief Jerry Bauzon, Austin Police Department
Chris Harris, Policy Director, Austin Justice Coalition
Marc Levin, Chief Policy Counsel at the Council on Criminal Justice
Mimi Marziani, President, Texas Civil Rights Project
Moderator: Tony Plohetski, Investigative Reporter, Austin American-Statesman and KVUE
