I’m surprised I’m having a mixed bag of feelings about “Fall Startup” this year. Now, let me be clear, I am not mixed about what’s ahead for us at Church of the Holy Spirit. I think we are moving into the last quarter of the year with great expectations set, lots of homework done to make it happen, and an incredible amount of good energy for creating positive things in our community and well beyond. My “dyscomfort” (I meant to spell it that way) is recognizing that all of us, myself included, are functioning every day with a pinch more fatigue, a tad more anxiety, a half cup of regret about what could have been, and a deep need to be of help whenever and wherever we can.
These feelings are not a reaction to a particular crisis associated with the Covid pandemic. We mostly know what to do during and after a crisis. That would require clarity, quick thinking, certain executive skills, and the ability to weigh the outcomes connected to our actions. But, what we have been through for over a year and a half now is more like a slow-burning reshaping of our world and our experience.
I met a friend of a friend last week on the street and with a great smile, he stuck his hand out for a normal handshake. Seeing my hesitation, he embarrassedly withdrew his offered hand and re-bid it as an elbow bump. But, the moment was lost. We both chuckled about the world we find ourselves in, and got on with a conversation about Henri’s path and our preparations for it.
What really got my attention is that when I got back in my truck and started to my next stop, I could feel a small presence of tears in the corners of my eyes. Not desperate tears, nor frightened ones, but tears of regret - having met there on the street, so much of the loss we have all experienced in these months just past. And, from somewhere inside, not of my conscious choosing, but born out of habit and memory came the words of the 23rd Psalm. Not the contemporary version, not even the version printed in the prayer book’s Psalter, but the good old comfortable words of the King James Version, where all the words fall into place like my feet would do on a well-known path. I don’t think I even heard my inner voice say “The Lord is my shepherd…, and by the time my working brain caught up with my spirit, I was already at, “He restoreth my soul…” and my eyes overflowed for about twenty seconds.
Recovering, I felt like I had just had a nice cold shower on a muggy day, accompanied by a fluffy dry towel and followed by an icy drink. Now my brain was running things again, and I understood that those momentary tears signaled a letting go of unspoken things, and a passage to something new. And the new thing was actually the rest of that Psalm. Restored, I was ready to be led in paths of righteousness, to fear no evil, and to be anointed while receiving an overflowing cup. Now, I was looking for goodness and mercy no longer content to stop at the surface exposure of something that looked like the valley of cultural upheaval and incredible inconvenience.
Now I could actually think of all the gifts I have been given even during these shaded months, things whose only source could be the goodness and mercy of a loving God. A God who reminds me daily of my part in a reign of peace and good will that is still trying to be born on earth. A God whose justice and mercy must be with us, or we would not have made it this far. A God who is not content with holding us close in this life, but invites us to dwell in God and with God forever.
Yep, all that happened in about 15 seconds, but its foundation was in a Psalm I was made to memorize in kindergarten some 60 years ago. It’s worldview was based on a hundred and more good examples of people who lived in, with, and for God’s Spirit and who have touched my life. Its promise is for a kinder gentler world, and its expectation is that I take this restoration and use it to the good of others.
That refused handshake became an opening that allowed me to clear my head and my heart, to remember who is leading and who is following and, through a misty twenty seconds, washed, dried, starched and pressed me for new service. To be followed by goodness and mercy all my days should be profit enough, but tied to a promise of living in God’s presence forever it is more than enough. You might say my cup is running over.
We’ve got this! As long as we give ourselves over to these tiny moments of refreshment, as long as we let God in to stir our hearts and awaken hope, as long as we notice that we are never on this journey alone, but in the presence of God and a cloud of witnesses…We’ve got this! And in this world, shaped differently than any we have known before, we can make a difference in the lives of the people around us.
And so, begins the Reign of God.
It’s going to be a fall full of new things, new experiences, and new faith and I am privileged to share it with you.
Joe+

STEWARDSHIP 2022
OUR FUTURE BEGINS!
|
|
OUR FUTURE BEGINS is more than a slogan for the stewardship campaign – it is real!
The Church of the Holy Spirit is poised in a transition period for its next incarnation of ministry. And, the future could not be more promising.
- Reconfigured and updated sanctuary, completing a plan approved 20 years ago;
- Habitat build in Orleans sponsored by our parish;
- Search Committee reviewing the insightful results of the CAT survey;
- Preparation of our Parish Profile as part of the search for new Rector;
- Opening of Galley West, a new community art gallery for Orleans with a nod to our past;
-
In-person worship resuming mindful of Covid-19 restrictions plus continued worship via Zoom and YouTube;
- Pastoral Care and Parish programs continuing in spite of pandemic restrictions;
- Welcoming our new Rector in 2022.
This is a Future to be proud of and a Future to look forward to…leading us into the next decades of the vital and varied ministries of the Church of the Holy Spirit, an outpost of God’s Kingdom here in Orleans.
But, to ensure that all comes to pass, we need the help and support of every member and friend of the parish.
Cutting to the chase, we need your pledge of financial support to underwrite and support our future.
Next week each household will receive a mailing from the Stewardship Team with a pledge card for 2022. Please read and ponder the request and prayerfully consider your support for 2022.
With each pledge received…OUR FUTURE BEGINS!
The Stewardship Team:

On August 19th, the Vestry reverted to meeting via Zoom. Having received Bishop Gayle's letter in response to increasing COVID concerns, we felt it was safer to connect from the comfort of our own offices and dens. By the time this newsletter reaches your inbox, you also will have received a copy of Bishop Gayle's letter. While we at CHS were already following many of the protocols outlined in her missive, there were a few changes that your Vestry approved and implemented already this past Sunday: chairs spaced six feet apart except for members of the same household and cancellation of coffee hour following the service. We certainly hope these changes will be short-lived, but the health and well-being of everyone in our congregation is paramount.
The Vestry approved the "Marshall Resolution" as a way of recognizing and showing our appreciation for all that Sandy and Phil have contributed to CHS over the years. This Resolution was shared during our Sunday service on August 22 and is also included in this newsletter. The original signed copy will be given to the Marshalls before they depart from their Orleans home later this week.
John Harter, Sanctuary Enhancement Committee Convener, reported on the Sanctuary Enhancement project is proceeding on schedule. The new platform for the altar has been varnished, and it lights up the space. The floors are being repainted and old carpeting removed. A neutral gray carpet for center aisles only has been ordered. Lighting updates are happening as you read this. Finally, one of the most crucial steps forward, repositioning of the organ and revoicing it for the new space will likely take place this week. We remain hopeful that we will reenter the Sanctuary for worship later this autumn as work is completed and Covid numbers decline.
The Vestry also discussed the outlook for parish events planned for later in the year, such as the Holiday Bazaar, the Antiques Show, and First Fruits. We certainly hope they can continue as planned, but we will have to continue to monitor the local COVID situation as well as any communications from our Diocese before we make final decisions.
Finally, in his report, Joe+ informed us that he finds himself "moving from an information gathering stage of ministry... into a program and staff analysis stage." Because of the isolation caused by the pandemic, we already have been given "a new chance to look at ministry, community, inclusion, trust building, and a healthy dependence on one another and with our future clergy." He reminded us that as a Vestry and a congregation, "only in our looking back at how much we have changed over the last two years, can we begin to understand how important change and flexibility and finding new ways of doing old things is to our survival as well." We do know how to do this and we've already changed in many ways. Our congregation has been richly blessed with talents and resources, and we are doing more than just surviving, we are succeeding. " There is nothing that we cannot do together if we can remember how important it is to stay together, to laugh at our mistakes, to support one another's strengths, to bear each other's burdens, and to trust that God is God of our unknown future, just as God is God of our well-known past."
Thank you all for your continued prayers and support. We welcome your comments and questions by phone, email, or in person.
Sincerely, Steve and Brenda

"Marshall Resolution"
Our Vestry enthusiastically passed the following resolution on August 19 in honor of our dear friends Sandy and Phil Marshall who are leaving the Cape this week.
We the undersigned, elected members of the Vestry of the Episcopal Church of the Holy Spirit, Orleans, Massachusetts consent and agree that the following resolution was made at its regular meeting on August 19, 2021:
Whereas Sandy and Phil Marshall are leaving Orleans this month for a new home in New Hampshire, be it hereby
Resolved that the Vestry of the Church of the Holy Spirit extends our deepest thanks and appreciation for all they have meant to us. This is a time for our whole parish to wish them the very best as they embark on the next chapter of their lives and to particularly honor them for the innumerable contributions they have made to the Church of the Holy Spirit over their years as members of our parish.
Sandy’s many ministries among us have included service on the Personnel Committee, singing in the choir, providing a caring presence as one of the Caregivers on the Pastoral Care Committee, and serving as Warden (for 4 years) during a previous recent interim period. She has been an active part of our EfM program, as a participant and as a facilitator of one of the two EfM Alumni groups, has served as a Licensed Eucharistic Minister and Licensed Eucharistic Visitor as well as a trainer, and she ran the Ladies Lunch for many years. Sandy also directed the Pathfinders group, helping new people discern their path to serve on a ministry at CHS.
Building on her many years of experience as a consultant for the Alban Institute, Sandy has facilitated innumerable conferences, retreats, and workshops which have played an important role in leadership development in our parish. Additionally, Sandy provided wise advice and counsel on parish management and conflict resolution to every Rector and Warden who served during her years with us. Phil joined many Men's’ Lunch meetings and was a quiet source of strength and support to Sandy at every step. And, be it further
Resolved, that we will miss Sandy and Phil, will always love them, and will cherish the many friendships and memories they leave with us.
May the God who has lovingly watched over us during our long journey together, continue to bless the Marshalls just as we have been blessed by their presence.
The Clergy, Wardens and Vestry of Church of the Holy Spirit

A Personal Message from Sandy and Phil Marshall
Dear CHS Parishioners,
This is a hard message to write but we want to say a proper goodbye to our Holy Spirit family. This week, we are moving to Wentworth Senior Living in Portsmouth N.H. Our daughter Laurie and her husband live nearby. We know that this is the right time for us to do this, yet leaving the Cape and our friendships will be difficult.
It’s especially hard for me, Sandy, to leave the Holy Spirit family I have loved for over twenty years. I joined the choir in 1998 as a newcomer and was welcomed by Bruce Lederhouse, the music director. Over the years, I’ve served the parish in many ways; as a Eucharist Minister and visitor, as warden, in the choir and on the pastoral care committee. All of it was personally rewarding, enriching and enjoyable (even the few challenges while warden!)
Our memories of Holy Spirit will be of parishioners who care for and support one another as Jesus taught us. That is evident in the quiet ways we reach out to each other and the more overt support we show for our ministries within our church community and through our outreach programs.
You have no idea how honored and surprised we were by the Vestry’s message and thank you to us. We will miss you all and will cherish happy memories of our years at Holy Spirit.
God bless you. With love,
Sandy and Phil

The Holy Cow! CAT (Congregational Assessment Tool) provided lots of good information that the search committee is “digesting.” Soon you will receive a summary of what we have gleaned from the results of the survey and how it will inform the profile that we are creating to let potential candidates for our new rector know what we are seeking.
The committee meets more or less every other Monday evening for a couple of hours and we have a half day session set for October 3. Due to circumstances beyond our control, it has been a long time since Adam+’s departure, but this is not a process that can be expedited.
We promise you we are endeavoring to give this our best effort and vow to be as transparent as possible during the process. We are grateful for your prayers and support.

Summer 2021
Food 4 Kids returns to CHS

Food 4 Kids News – The People Who Make It All Possible
Another F4K summer is almost over. Our recreation program partners in Orleans, Chatham and Eastham said goodbye to their children a week ago. Those in Brewster, Wellfleet and Truro finished up just this past Friday. And last, but not least, carrying through this, our last week, are the recreation programs in Harwich and Provincetown, along with Truro Library and Nauset School’s grab-and-go meals.
We don’t have all the numbers in yet, but we know from our sites that it has been a great summer for them and the children we both serve, especially after last summer when most programs were not able to operate.
Thank you to our marvelous staff! Despite the lingering challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, including unpredictable food supplies, staffing shortages, last minute changes from our sites and other disruptions, their skill, commitment, and teamwork more than met the needs of our sites and the children we both serve.
- Anne Marie Mullen – F4K Operations Manager
- Mary O’Reilly – F4K Kitchen Manager
- Gerard Costa – F4K Assistant Manager
- Matt Montiero – F4K Site Supervisor, Chatham
- Laura Froeschner – F4K Program Manager
- Susan Murray and the Food Service Staff at Nauset Middle School
Thank you to all who have volunteered at Church of the Holy Spirit and at Nauset Middle School this summer! We could not have done it without your help.
More than 100 volunteered to help prepare the meals (37), pack the meals (53), make recycling runs with all the cardboard (5), and drive to our sites (36). And this summer we had 3 volunteers step up to fill the Site Supervisor role at Brewster Recreation and Truro Library. That’s more than 700 hours preparing and packing meals, more than 90 hours handing them out, and more than 6,850 miles driving.
Your commitment to the children of the lower/outer Cape and their families and your willingness to put that commitment into action is remarkable and greatly appreciated.
Many of you were there every week, some even every day. Many of you filled multiple roles, and all responded with grace to whatever was needed to meet the new challenges of any particular day.
We hope to see you all next summer!

ANNUAL HOLIDAY BAZAAR RETURNS TO CHS SATURDAY NOVEMBER 6, 2021 9:00 - 2:00
|
|
Given the recent Covid concerns and guidance from the Bishop, the Vestry has decided to wait until their September 16th meeting to make a final decision about the November 6th Holiday Bazaar. In the meantime, we need to plan as if it will happen.
That includes getting all of us to participate in one way or another. Here’s how you can help. Questions? Contact the designated table leaders or Nancy Boccia
Food table – Cris Harter and Cynthia Murray
While you are canning or pickling, please add a few extra jars to donate to the food table! We need jams, preserves, pies, cakes, breads, baked goods, and any other food you would like to donate!
- If we need to package your donation, let us know ahead of time and we’ll take care of it.
-Cookies – Calling all cookie bakers! We are looking for people to bake cookies. Make them now and freeze them. We will package for sale.
Jewelry – Leslie Lambros and Suzy Grey
It’s a perfect time to sort through jewelry and donate pieces to the bazaar! Do you have some finer jewelry (precious and costume) you no longer wear that you could donate? Please include information for these better items. We have them appraised by a local jeweler and set appropriate prices. This is a key money maker for the bazaar. The dealers line up early the morning of the bazaar and rush in to see what we have. We are happy to pick up your donations if needed.
Used books – Elizabeth Merritt
We are collecting books that are in good condition to sell at this table. (No musty books PLEASE) Let Nancy know if you need books picked up.
Lunchroom – Nancy Boccia
Our kitchen will again bustle with a great lunch menu and fun. If you would like to be part of the team for prepping November 4th or 5th and serving on November 6th, please let Nancy Boccia know.
Cheese table – Ruth Campbell A favorite and so glad to have this back again.
Advertising and social media – Kate Paradise
Signs and flyers – Diana Crighton
- If you would like to help delivering posters or setting up signs, contact Nancy Boccia.
Bazaar Volunteers -
Set-up, clean-up, and “Day of Bazaar” helpers will be needed. More information will be in the October newsletter. Look for a sign-up sheet at Coffee Hour in October; or contact Nancy Boccia.

The Cape and Islands Deanery will be meeting on Thursday, September 23rd in the Parish Hall at Holy Spirit. Given that we meet four times per year, it is an honor for us to host this group.
Of particular interest to our membership at Holy Spirit is that Celia Calhoun has been elected as the new lay co-convener of the Deanery Assembly. This gathering will be an opportunity to hear Deanery as well as Diocesan reports and updates.
Please be in touch with Celia or Kate Paradise if you wish to join in.

JOIN THE CHS ALTAR FLOWER GUILD
Do you enjoy the arrangements that enhance our Sunday Worship Service? They are made by members of the parish. It's really quite easy to do and they add such color and beauty to our worship experience. We need a couple more volunteers.
If you would like to learn how to make these arrangements and sign up to create the arrangements for a couple of Sundays a year, please contact Marty Williams or Cynthia Murray.
If you have any small vases, please leave them on the counter by the bathrooms in the church. We use them to make small bouquets from the Sunday flowers and deliver to members who could use a "pick me up - thinking about you" from their parish family.

LADIES LUNCHEON While we wait for Covid to start behaving again again, we want to let you know our hopes are to resume our monthly luncheons at some point. This past winter, Jean Collins suggested we all make some quilt squares that could be worked on at the luncheons and become a quilt to be raffled off with proceeds to a charity. So just as a reminder.... there is still time to "get squaring" so to speak. Stay tuned for luncheon news.

Watch over thy children, O'Lord, as their days increase.
Bless and guide them wherever they may be, keeping them unspotted
from the world. Strengthen them when they stand;
comfort them when discouraged or sorrowful; raise them up if they fall;
And in their hearts, may thy peace, which passes all understanding,
Abide all the days of their lives; Through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.
