"BEYOND OUR SURGE CAPACITY"
A Pastoral Reflection from Bishop Gates
|
|
In the church, as in the wider world, the coronavirus has challenged us to adapt, to find new ways to do important things, to protect ourselves and one another, to create processes and methodologies, to maintain relationships, to keep on keeping on. “It’s important to recognize that it’s normal in a situation of great uncertainty and chronic stress to get exhausted,” comments the psychologist, “to feel like you’re depleted or experience periods of burnout.”
This exhaustion is showing up in our physical health and in our mental health. “The more accustomed you are to solving problems, to getting things done, to having a routine,” says another mental health professional, “the harder it will be on you because none of that is possible right now. You get feelings of hopelessness and helplessness.”
In the face of these realities, here are 3 ways I am trying to find strength for each day.
1. Have compassionate expectations.
2. Maintain our most important relationships.
3. Live as people of hope.

WARDENS' MESSAGE
We hope this edition of the newsletter finds you all well and enjoying the beautiful fall colors on Cape Cod.
We would like to thank everyone that took part in our very successful Open House on Saturday, October 17th. The cool temperatures, wind, and scattered rain didn’t put a damper on the event. Fifty-nine parishioners joined us for a masked, socially distanced walk through our grounds, Galley West, and church building. The campus and church looked gorgeous, and parishioners were able to see first-hand all of the hard work done by our Buildings & Grounds Committee, Wayne Currey, Tony Johnson, and the B&G indispensable volunteers. Many thanks to Gail+, Ann Pike-Paris, and our Welcoming Committee for spearheading this event, Joan Kirchner for the beautiful music, and the volunteers who worked the event.
As we start to hold more in-person events, one question keeps popping up, “Why do we have to register for these events?” Great question; the answer is two-fold.
First, we are limited in the number of attendees we can have and keep everyone socially distant. And second, we need a list of attendees for Covid contact tracing, if need be.
Because the outdoor Evening Prayer celebration on September 28th was successful, we have planned another in-person event for All Saints Day on Sunday November 1st. A separate Constant Contact will be sent about this event.
In other news, we are in the process of interviewing a Transitional Priest-in-Charge (TPIC, new name for Interim). The process is moving in a positive direction and we hope to have an announcement in the near future.
The annual Diocesan Convention, “Embracing Brave Change”, is November 7th and is happening virtually this year. We will be well represented with Celia Calhoun and Dianne Fromm as our delegates this year. Many thanks, and our prayers are with both of you as you undertake this role on behalf of our parish.

NOMINATING COMMITTEE ANNOUNCEMENT
The Vestry has formed the Nominating Committee, and given it it’s charge in preparation for the Church of the Holy Spirit’s next Annual Meeting, to be held in February 2021. Appointed to the Committee were: Mary Anne Bragdon, Judy Gardiner, Cynthia Murray, Kate Paradise, and Rick Paris.
While some of the current Officers and Vestry Members are eligible for re-nominations, at the Annual Meeting, the parish will need to elect one Warden for a two-year term, a Treasurer and a Clerk, each for a one-year term, and four Vestry-at-large members for two-year terms. The parish will also elect one Convention Delegate/Deanery Assembly Representative for a two-year term, as well as an Alternate Convention Delegate/Deanery Assembly Representative for a two-year term.
Anyone interested in making suggestions for the open 2021 positions is encouraged to contact a Nominating Committee member.

To date, 94 pledges for 2021 have been received, totaling $232,300. (vs. last years 131 for over $300,000) Comparing this figure to the total pledged by these 94 pledges last year, we have seen an increase of 3%. The total $232,300 pledged to date is still significantly lower than our projected needs. If you plan to make a pledge for 2021, please return your pledge card as soon as possible. We are starting to create our 2021 budget and receiving your pledge is a critical part of that process.
If you need a pledge card, please call the parish office and one will be mailed to you.

Have you hesitated to make an online donation because the processing fees seemed too high? We now are able to designate a much lower processing fee ("Convenience Fee") for donations using Bank Account transfers to CHS vs. Credit/Debit Card charges on our online giving form.
We are grateful to all who have turned to Online Giving for their donations to Holy Spirit. If you would like to make an online donation, click here or visit the Holy Spirit website and click on the green GIVE NOW button on any page.

Watch over thy children, O'Lord, as their days increase.
Bless and guide them wherever they may be
keeping them unspotted from the world.
Strengthen them when they stand;
comfort them when discouraged or sorrowful; raise them up if they fall;
And in their hearts, may thy peace, which passes all understanding,
Abide all the days of their lives;
Through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.

BUILDING OUR OWN PUMPKIN PATCH

The Church School Team wanted to do something special for our children this Halloween Season. Each family was sent letters (links below) inviting them to come to the Parish Hall this Saturday, October 24th and pick up pumpkins to be carved and brought back and placed at our church sign on the corner of Route 28 and Monument Road the following week and create a special pumpkin patch.
THE CHURCH SCHOOL TEAM IS INVITING ALL (ADULTS & KIDS)
OF THE PARISH TO HELP CREATE A GREAT PUMPKIN PATCH
We want lots of pumpkins for the Pumpkin Patch under the church sign at Route 28!!!!
So grown ups and "kids of all ages" are invited to come on Saturday October 24th to pick up a pumpkin to carve and bring back to the pumpkin patch!
Let us know how many pumpkins you want by
end of day Thursday October 22nd.
Just call or text Ruth Campbell. (Her number is in the Parish Directory). Then carve them and return to the pumpkin patch under the church sign.

FRIENDS OF PRISONERS (FOP)
ENDS 40 YEAR MINISTRY TO EX-OFFENDERS ON CAPE COD
Rev. Bill Heuss and Rev. Nancy Miller, members of the CHS Outreach Committee (OC), have both represented the Hyannis-based half-way house ministry to formerly incarcerated men. Bill and Nancy announced at the last CHS OC meeting that the
40-year old program is ending because of lack of funding.
This sad news comes after two-and-a-half years of trying to keep the program afloat.

THE MYSTERY IS SOLVED
Thank you to everyone who wrote or called with information about "Dick's Garden" that Nancy Boccia found while cleaning the garden during one of our recent Garden Parties.
This garden, to the left of the church exit lot, was installed in memory of Dick Jones, wife of Helen Gould Jones. Richard Jones, a.k.a. Dick, was a long time member of CHS and passed away on February 6, 2008. Dick and Helen were friends in their youth in Worcester. Helen moved to Orleans in 1946 when she married Willis (Bill) Gould and together they ran the Gould Real Estate Company. Bill passed away in 1970.
When Dick's wife, Edith died in 1983, Helen encouraged Dick to vacation on Cape Cod... and eventually, being good friends, who helped each other through their losses, they fell in love, Dick moved to Orleans when they married in 1984 and he joined CHS.
Dick became an active member, joining the Vestry and then being the chair of the CHS Property Committee (a.k.a. now the Building and Grounds Committee) and spent many hours tending the campus grounds.
Following Dick's death in 2008 and in his memory and love of our parish, the women of the St. Martha's and Kimball Guilds decided to provide the funds for the memorial garden. Edith Hart designed it, plants were purchased at Crocker Nursery, Tom Dewing and Meredith Perkins helped plant it, and Betty Gorczyca painted the slate sign.
The B&G Garden Team will look into "sprucing up" the garden in the spring and also refurbishing the sign.
For a wonderful remembrance of Dick and Helen sent by Fr. Herb Skelly, click here.
If there are other campus artifacts or items in one of the buildings that you always wonder about, let us know and we will reach out to members for answers.
Send your questions to Sue Sasso at newsletters@chsorleans.org. Thank you!!

OPEN HOUSE - SATURDAY OCTOBER 17TH
|
|
Our Sneak Peek Open House on Saturday October 17th was attended by 59 members. Thanks to the detailed planning from the Welcoming Committee, Ann Pike-Paris and Gail+, we were able to showcase all the things that the Buildings and Ground Committee, CHS staff and volunteers have done at CHS.
Click Here for a list of all the improvements that have happened during the pandemic shut down that made the buildings and campus look wonderful for the Open House and is now waiting for everyone to return.
Also, Click here for a collection of photos of members who attended the open house.
Fay Sargent was one of the volunteers at the Open House. Her thank you comments to Ann Pike-Paris perfectly captured the spirit of the event.
Thanks for all your hard work, pulling this together, and everyone in this group who did their parts as well. I have to add, even in the rain, the church shone. Wayne and Tony have done an enormous amount of repairing, washing windows (they even look bright looking from the outside in!), the steeple, the steps and all. On the inside, what I saw looked bright and new, floors, the Sacristy, creative artwork and all.
Seeing people as they exited was wonderful; everyone was pleased and gracious. They seemed to enjoy the grounds and Memorial Garden as well.
The Holy Spirit was shining through the building, the people, the work of our hands. Praise the Lord! May the light that shone , even in the rain, continue to grow in our hearts in days and months to come.
The Steeple and Cross over the front door were also given a fresh coat of paint.

REMINDER FROM THE BUILDING & GROUNDS COMMITTEE
Please do not tack or tape anything on the church doors or surrounding trim!
If you have something that needs to be placed on or near one of the doors, you must first get approval from Gail Smith+ and then, Wayne Currey will place it in an appropriate manner. Thank you for your cooperation and respect of our buildings.

Where is your journey… what is your adventure?
I heard this during a TV show and thought it was something worth sharing. Sue
We all have made mistakes that we regret that now have to keep us company. We know we should move on and accept the regrets. But how about this instead...
There isn’t so much a cure for regret but a remedy…you can sit and writhe in the empty fantasy of what you would do better if you could go back… or you can do better… NOW… Think about it.

CHS FREE SHOP AND OTHER THRIFT STORE UPDATES
Sadly but understandably so, the Free Shop is closed and no longer accepting donations. A decision was made to bag all the clothing in the Free Shop and take the clothes where they would be needed. Suzy Gray and Wayne Currey bagged all the clothing and Suzy, a master at recycling, has distributed all clothing, gift items, and books to different locations on the Cape.
Here's Suzy's list which might help you with all the clothing you no longer need - of course just until the Free Shop opens again!
- Wellfleet Mass Appeal (behind Dunkin Doughnuts)
- Orleans Transfer Station - Red Cross bins & book drop off bins
- Eastham Transfer Station - Red Cross bins
- Our Lady of the Cape Thrift Shop - Brewster - 11am Saturday drop off
- Goodwill - Hyannis
