Holier Than Thou?
Who do you think would be holier: a priest or a prostitute? Jesus challenges our expectations in this Sunday's gospel reading by telling a group of priests and elders that prostitutes and tax collectors will enter the kingdom of God before they will. Looking at this in light of St. Paul's instruction to think of others as more important than ourselves, I talk in this week's reflection about how God doesn't judge us based on how holy we are compared to other people, but by how humble we are before Him.
Following on this, I want to share with you one of my favorite prayers, the Litany of Humility. I find that when I'm struggling with the sin of pride, or just feeling spiritually out of whack, praying this litany for a few days always helps get me back on the right track. It ends with the powerful petition that "others may become holier than I, provided that I might become as holy as I should." You can find the whole prayer here on our web site.
I hope you have a blessed week.
