The Sundays of Ordinary Time (so-called because of their ordinal numbering) take us through the life of Christ, before and after the two seasons that celebrate the central mysteries of our faith - Christmas and Easter. In 2022 (Year C of the Sunday cycle) the Gospel readings are mostly from St. Luke, though it is the Gospel according to St. John that we hear this Sunday.

Week of Prayer for Christian Unity
The 2022 theme for the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity (January 18 - 25) was developed by the Middle East Council of Churches based in Beirut, Lebanon, and it refers to Matthew 2:2 – We saw the star in the east, and we came to worship him. Find a daily Scripture and prayer guide for this week.
Sunday of the Word of God & the Path to Unity
January 24 is Sunday of the Word of God. In instituting this celebration, which occurs during the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity, Pope Francis in 2019 wrote, "This is more than a temporal coincidence: the celebration of the Sunday of the Word of God has ecumenical value, since the Scriptures point out, for those who listen, the path to authentic and firm unity."

How to Prepare
About the Synod Logo
"A large, majestic tree, full of wisdom and light, reaches for the sky. A sign of deep vitality and hope which expresses the cross of Christ. It carries the Eucharist, which shines like the sun. The horizontal branches, opened like hands or wings, suggest, at the same time, the Holy Spirit. The people of God are not static: they are on the move." (from the Vatican Synod website)

Faith Formation
Let's Get Reading for February!
Fr. Jack Hurley leads the Cathedral Book Club discussion of "The Life of Jesus Christ: Understanding the Story of the Gospels," a new book by veteran writer and journalist Russell Shaw. Plan to join the discussion on Thursday, February 24 at 7pm.
On the Parish Council
L.J. Milone writes on the role of prayer in the Parish Council:
A council is mainly responsible for helping the pastor make the parish a place for others to encounter God. The council is called to discern how the Spirit wants the Gospel to come alive in the lives of the people. The pastor and the members of the council must spend time together in deep prayer, which includes contemplative silence, listening to the Word, and reciting the official prayers of the Church. Prayer is one of the pastoral council’s central activities.
Meditation Groups
Meditation groups meet twice a week on Zoom (email L.J. Milone for the Zoom link):
- Sundays at 1:30pm
- Wednesdays at 8pm
