Getting a Spring jump-start on your garden

It's mid February, cold weather is coming and going and thoughtful planning now assures a quick jump-start once the weather cooperates.

The plants you choose for your gardens can really complement and balance your landscaping. Selecting a variety of types will allow for diversity and also assures that if a disease attacks one species chances are that others in the bed will survive. The same applies to trees and shrubs.

Be sure when determining plants for your front yard to note the colors of your siding, brick and trim. Selecting plants that repeat those colors helps bring symmetry to your landscaping and home. Keep in mind that Bellevue's planting zone is zone 6 when selecting new plants for your yard. And utilizing magazines and books for plant and landscaping ideas will help tremendously. Our local library and on-line sites provide endless resources.

Tips & Tricks

It's not too late to winter seed!

Winter seeding can be done up until the first week in March. The freezing and thawing of soil allows the seed to penetrate into the soil. You will reap the benefits as the weather warms with new spring grass.

And remember to take your lawn mower to your local repair shop NOW! Waiting until the first cutting will have you waiting weeks. Repair shops are not busy now but will be in April.
