Our Belmont Forum Members met at the SRI2022
We had the pleasure of bringing Belmont Forum Members together to meet in a hybrid format at SRI 2022. The two-day meeting was aimed at providing Members and Partners with opportunities to engage in pre-scoping activities and think about where they would like future Collaborative Research Actions (CRAs) to be developed.
We heard from several groups who have been exploring the broader research landscape - identifying gaps and needs across several spaces relevant to the Belmont Forum’s Global Environmental Change Mandate, including IPBES & ARA. We also reviewed the outcomes of the COP26 and the Global Funders Forum (GFF) to help identify where challenges and needs have already been identified by the global community, and to consider how these overlap with international and national commitments of our members. Coming out of this meeting we were also able to identify two collaborative research actions that have been approved to go forward for scoping: Climate and Culture and the Amazon Initiative.

Climate Environment and Health II (CEH2)
This CRA follows from CHE1. It aims to maximize collective efforts and produce actionable science that protects both environment and health. It will explore questions that enhance understanding of the connections between climate, environment and health in order to provide knowledge and information that reduces climate-sensitive health risks.
The following Expert Scoping Meeting for the European region will be held on 13, 14, and 15 (TBC) September 2022.
A different type of scientist is needed to lead team-based, trans-disciplinary science and innovation in the 21st century. This initiative would focus on recruiting, training and networking our next generation of scientists that will give our science communities more legitimacy across communities.
The next Scoping Meetings will be scheduled for the following months, stay tuned!
This CRA aims to build upon the network activities and lessons learned generated during the ongoing Pathways to Sustainability I call. In this next iteration, the call will focus on research that develops innovative solutions and/or synthesizes positive and negative inter-linkages between the economy, technology, institutions and the environment, climate, biodiversity, and human well-being. This will support the co-design of sustainable development pathways.
The next Scoping Meetings will be scheduled for the following months, stay tuned!
This CRA aims to identify and fund relevant and pressing priorities for research at the interface between cultural heritage and climate change. The two major knowledge gaps that are expected to be addressed are a) The impact of climate change on cultural heritage, and b) Opportunities for climate mitigation and sustainable development.
The first Funders Scoping event will take place on 28 September 2022, and the Experts Scoping for the Europe/Africa/Americas/Asia regions will be organized for 7 September 2022.
This CRA will explore the integration of knowledge towards the sustainability of the Amazon region and its functions including the socio-economic and environmental processes. It will aim to identify and help to implement measures to sustain and conserve the livelihoods of communities in the region. It will also explore questions related to environmental justice and the protection of knowledge, innovations and practices of indigenous and local communities.
The next Scoping events will be scheduled for the following months, stay tuned!
The prioritized topics for this initiative include: climate change (including health), data and biospecimen governance, epidemic preparedness and global health security, food and nutrition security, the fourth industrial revolution, gender and science, genomics and precision medicine, maternal and neonatal health, and mental health.
The following Funders Scoping event will take place on 31 August 2022.
Belmont Forum Plenary Open Session:
The next Belmont Forum Plenary will include an open session on 27 October 2022, with the aim of opening a dialogue with interested organizations to knowing more about the CRAs in implementation and scoping processes.

Workshop on Transdisciplinary Research at SRI 2022:
The workshop was organized in partnership with the Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI) and was held in two sessions. The first session was focused on sharing foundations for transdisciplinary (TD) science and knowledge co-production, it was also open dialogue with participants about the meaning of transdisciplinarity.
The second session explored best practices and lessons learned in applying a transdisciplinary approach to research in diverse geographic settings. The TD teams from Start, NICH-Arctic and Jawic shared insights from projects developed in the Arctic, Africa and the Caribbean.

Workshop on Science and Policy at SRI 2022
This session was organized in partnership with IAI and Latinoamerica21. The activity focused on reflecting on providing a basic understanding of how to position a discourse and provide solid arguments to improve, expand and create public policy, so policymakers and other stakeholders can work on solutions as problems and challenges emerge.
