Ben's Buzz Special Edition:
2016-2017 School Year Calendar
March 17, 2016
Recently we surveyed parents, students and faculty for input into the design of the 2016-2017 School Year Calendar. Feedback from our parent community was 72% in favor of maintaining an abbreviated February Break. The student feedback was an even 50/50 split between maintaining an abbreviated break and reverting to a full week's vacation.
We did have several responses indicate a desire to align our calendar to the Franklin Public School Systems calendar. To that end, we wanted to let you know that
the Franklin Public School is also considering alternate vacation schedules moving forward and has developed a subcommittee to investigate their options for the 2017-2018 school year.
Following the results of the surveys a draft calendar was presented to the Board of Trustees during their March monthly meeting. The final 2016-2017 Calendar was discussed at length and was subsequently approved via a unanimous vote of the Board of Trustees.
I invite you to download a copy
HERE. A few important highlights are as follows:
- The first day of school for students in Grade One through Eight will be Tuesday, August 30th. (Kindergarten students will have an Open house from 9:30 - 11 and report for their first 1/2 day of attendance on Wednesday August 31st.)
- Our first week of school will be a three day week with a day off on Friday, September 2nd. Our second week of school will be a four day week with a day off on Monday, September 5th in observance of Labor Day. Our first full five day week will be September 12th through September 16th.
- Building upon feedback from parents, we have taken several opportunities to schedule Professional Development days adjacent to existing holiday weekends.
- Due to the scheduling of Columbus Day and Yom Kippur in October we have planned a full day Professional Development day for our Faculty and Staff on October 11th. This will provide a five day break for our families.
- A noon time release has also been scheduled the Friday before both Dr. Martin Luther King Day and Memorial Day weekends.
- Parent teacher conferences in November have again been scheduled just prior to the Thanksgiving Break. This allows us to issue the first trimester Report Cards in advance of the meetings which provides tangible data for discussion.
- You will see that we have elected an extended President's Day Weekend during February instead of a full week-long break.
- Barring any snow days, this schedule affords us a last day of school on June 14th.
Have a great rest of the week!
