Behavioral Health and I/DD Town Hall Meeting Reminder
North Carolina's public Behavioral Health and Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (I/DD) System is undergoing major changes. We want to hear from our consumers, families and advocates about how the system is working and how we can assist in creating a system that improves health outcomes and promotes recovery for all North Carolinians.
UNC-TV and the Governor's Institute are hosting a series of webinars to talk about the changes and gather feedback from stakeholders in their specific local management entities/managed care organization (LME/MCO).
We want to include your questions at the end of the webinar. You can post your questions in the live chat during the webinar or you can record a video message beforehand and upload the video file to a OneDrive folder we have set up for the meeting. You can also email your questions to Suzanne.thompson@dhhs.nc.gov, but please include the LME/MCO in the subject line. To upload a video of your questions, go to "Upload Your Video Questions" for the specific LME/MCO on the attached flyer.

- Updates to Clinical Coverage Policy 5A-2, Respiratory Equipment and Supplies

2020 Veterans Day Holiday and Checkwrite Schedule
The NCTracks Call Center will be closed Wednesday, Nov. 11 in observance of the Veterans Day holiday. (The Pharmacy Prior Approval Unit will be open holiday hours from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.)
In keeping with the published 2020 checkwrite schedules, there will be no effect on the NCTracks checkwrite date. However, EFT funds transfer to banks a day late (on Thursday Nov. 12 instead of Wednesday) because of the federal holiday. The posting and availability of funds to provider bank accounts will depend on the provider's financial institution. Bank of America customers should see their payments in their accounts on the day that the EFT is processed, which will be Thursday Nov. 12, 2020. Providers who bank at other financial institutions should see payments the business day following the date that the EFT is processed, which will be Friday Nov. 13, 2020 in the afternoon. (Some may post sooner.)
The 2020 and 2021 checkwrite schedules can be found under Quick Links on the Provider Portal home page at https://www.nctracks.nc.gov/content/public/providers.html

Extended Family Matters in Adoption
A strong support network is crucial for all families, but especially for families formed through adoption. Extended family members, such as grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins, often provide essential support to children and their families-both birth and adoptive. As we recognize the need for adoption competence in services, we should also acknowledge that children who are adopted will be better cared for and supported if their extended family have at least a general understanding of the lifelong journey of adoption as well as the impact of trauma and separation and loss. While birth and adoptive families likely receive education and support to learn about adoption and how it will affect their lives, extended family members are typically not given the same preparation.
Professionals can help families strengthen their support systems by identifying ways that they can talk about adoption with relatives. A holistic approach to adoption preservation and support-focusing on the needs of the whole family, including birth families and extended family members-is key to strengthening adoptive families. This can help prevent adoption disruptions and family misunderstandings in the long-term. It is in everyone's interest to be committed to creating a safe, loving, and affirming environment for the child to thrive. Professionals should take time to guide and support parents on how they want to respond to questions and concerns raised by their relatives and loved ones without shame in their adoption choice. Professionals can equip parents with skills and strategies that can help them overcome potential challenges, including: - Addressing and dispelling common myths about adoption
- Explaining to relatives that their child's story is personal, and their child can share the details when he/she is ready to
- Helping extended family members to understand how aspects of their child's behavior may be related to experiences he/she had prior to adoption
- Educating relatives about the child's cultural/ethnic background, including their cultural customs and traditions that should be honored and incorporated into family life
