When I think about spring, I’m reminded of a well-known parable my yoga teacher once shared: that of the oak and the reed. The old fable is about an oak tree that falls during a windy storm despite its deep roots and rigid trunk expected to withstand it, while the reed survives because it “bends with the wind.” She used the fable to emphasize the importance of the physical practice. The practice of yoga will keep the joints and muscles limber like the reed. She liked to say “you will be tying your shoes and reaching the jars on the top shelf when you are well into your nineties if you continue this practice.”

There is more to this fable, though, as it is a lesson of pride and humility. As I look around and see new growth on the trees, I am reminded of this little tale. It is important to have your roots, but do not become so rigid that you can not withstand some of the storms life will throw at you. Know that you are not bigger than anything or anyone. It reminds me to be brave and flexible during adversity and to always know there is room to grow and learn.

Think of this little parable the next time you are in tree pose and smile when you wobble because that is what is helping you grow!

Happy Spring,
RaeLynn
