Holy Eucharist at 10 a.m.

The Social Justice Commission invites you to a festive Eucharist at Christ Church Cathedral to celebrate the life and ministry of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Please join us in-person or via livestream on Monday, January 19th at 10:00 a.m.

In an early video, Bishop Fisher challenged us to consider MLK Jr. Day as a "day on" rather than a "day off." Many choose to model faith in action to honor the man who was a prophet of God's dream and suffered incarceration and for the Gospel.

In preparation for this day, we ask you to commit to action, service or advocacy during the week before or after January 19 - MLK Jr. Day. You can share your commitment via the online form below. Our commitments will be printed out and brought to the altar at the offertory - a tangible symbol of our collective "day on" and our rejection of all that is unjust in our time.

I appeal to you, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present

yourselves as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God,

which is your spiritual worship.  Romans 12:1

The form lists ten possibilities for action, service, or advocacy. You can check one or as many as you feel able to do. You can also add your own local idea, if you prefer. In-person or online, be empowered by the Eucharist to move beyond the cathedral walls as living stones.

Preaching in our Cathedral

The Rev. Canon Dr. Walter Brownridge

Walter is a graduate of General Theological Seminary, The University of San Diego Graduate School of International Relations, and the Georgetown University Law Center. He has written on law and theology, practical theology, and Church & Society. His articles have appeared in several publications, including the Anglican Theological Review. He was co-editor and contributor to a special volume of the ATR dedicated to the late Archbishop Desmond Tutu. Fr. Brownridge is the author of a forthcoming ATR article on Law, Theology, and Reproductive Choice in the Episcopal Church. He is also a contributor to the book Preaching Black Lives Matter. 

Walter has served as a Cathedral Dean and a Seminary Associate Dean at the School of Theology at Sewanee: University of the South. He served parishes in Ohio, Michigan, Delaware, and New York City and as a Canon at St. George’s Cathedral in Cape Town, South Africa. 

Walter concluded his service as Canon to the Ordinary for Cultural Transformation in the Diocese of Vermont where he spearheaded the diocese’s work in such areas as Christian Formation, Racial Justice, Stewardship, and Creation Care. He is currently interim at Christ Episcopal Church in Montpelier, VT. It is our great honor to welcome him to our cathedral!

The Equal Justice Initiative is committed to ending mass incarceration and excessive punishment in the United States, to challenging racial and economic injustice, and to protecting basic human rights for the most vulnerable people in American society.
