A Message from Patty Houpt
Executive Director, NEEBC
|
In my role as Executive Director, I am often asked, "Is there a 'NEEBC' in another region of the country?" These are members who have had a great experience with NEEBC here in the northeast, and may be relocating. Or, it may be on behalf of a marketing or salesperson looking to tap into the local employee benefits market elsewhere.
We are always flattered by the question. What NEEBC does is unique. We are not a local affiliate of a national benefits organization. And, while we offer SHRM credits and sponsor World at Work programs, we are an independent, locally-grown organization. Founded in 1980 in response the passage of ERISA, NEEBC has grown from a small group of senior legal, consulting and benefits professionals to a membership of over 1,200 individuals. More than 2,000 people attend our face-to-face programs each year. We are a 501(c)3 nonprofit, and we have awarded over $170,000 in benefit scholarships since 1990.
While many of us are now able to access benefits information at our fingertips on the web, or log into many free webinars offered on a wide array of topics, we feel the face-to-face encounters we provide are irreplaceable. Does it take extra effort to attend a program? Absolutely. But the content, networking and personal interactions we provide cannot be attained in the virtual world!
On more than one occasion, I have had high level speakers tell me that the NEEBC programs and conferences are either on par with, or exceed, what they experience at national events. With over 100 different speakers at our programs annually, we draw from immense talent in our own back yard!
Our upcoming Best Practices Conference on December 8th showcases the breadth and depth of this experience. Please join us to hear about local and national benefit innovations. Congratulate yourself for making it through open enrollment, and take some time at the conference to reconnect face-to- face with your all-important professional network. We should all be proud of the role NEEBC plays in the benefits community, and our combined efforts will ensure NEEBC continues to be on the leading edge of thought leadership and premier educational forums for many years to come.
