Maintaining an optimal level of wellness is crucial to quality of life. At Joyful Journey, six Domains of Wellness guide the development of programs and activities, ensuring each Friend’s unique needs and strengths are supported. This month, we’re focusing on what it means to be socially healthy—and why it matters so much.
We define the Social Domain as making friends, feeling close to others, and sharing experiences in ways that enhance a sense of belonging. It includes building healthy, nurturing, and supportive relationships while fostering genuine connection and meaningful interaction.
Research consistently shows that strong social connections play a vital role in overall health, particularly for older adults. Studies from the National Institute on Aging indicate that social isolation and loneliness are linked to higher risks of depression, cognitive decline, and even heart disease. Conversely, older adults who remain socially engaged tend to experience better mental health, improved memory, and a greater sense of purpose. Regular social interaction has been associated with lower stress levels, improved mood, and increased longevity.
At Joyful Journey, social wellness comes to life in meaningful and joyful ways each day. Friends gather around shared meals, participate in group activities, enjoy live music, and engage in conversations that spark laughter and connection. Whether it’s reminiscing over familiar songs, collaborating on an art project, or simply sitting side by side in companionship, these moments help foster a strong sense of community.
We also recognize that building connections looks different for everyone. Some Friends thrive in lively group settings, while others prefer one-on-one interactions or quieter moments of connection. Our team is intentional in creating opportunities that meet each individual where they are, helping every Friend feel comfortable, included, and valued.
At its heart, social wellness reminds us that we are not meant to navigate life alone. Through connection, we find joy, purpose, and a true sense of belonging.
