Rabbi Silvestri's Round Up
|
As was often the case, Loren arose before sunrise to walk by the ocean’s edge and greet the new day. As he walked along the sand, he focused on a boy off in the distance. He noticed the boy bend, reach and flail his arms as if he was dancing to celebrate the new day. As Loren inched closer, he noticed that the boy was not dancing, rather, bending down to sift through the piles that the tide brought in searching for starfish to throw back into the ocean. Upon reaching the boy, Loren asked the boy what he was doing to which he replied that he was returning the starfish to the sea since if he did not they would certainly die once the sun rose.

MLK
Though RMBA had the day off of school in commemoration of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, we did not want the day to go by without discussing the critical messages of the day. In that spirit, Rabbi Yitzy Sprung led two important conversations on Tuesday - with our high school and with our entire teaching staff - to better understand Judaism's opposition to racial discrimination.

As Tall As a Penguin
Morah Aviva’s ECE4 class began a short unit on penguins this week! Did you know that an Emperor penguin is 4 ft. tall?! The class measured everyone’s height in comparison to the Emperor penguin and some friends were almost as tall! They also had a great time making fist print penguins on icebergs after learning that some types of penguins live in cold icy climates, while others live in warmer climates. Students also enjoyed decorating mitten shapes with markers and sequins as part of culminating their Winter unit. The class is diligently learning to identify the letters in the Alphabet and their order by practicing on a special Alphabet Arc. Building with special magnet shapes was also a big hit in the Science Center this week!

Operation Dugo
On Wednesday this week lower school students honored Holocaust survivor Dugo Leitner by participating in the global Operation Dugo project, making and eating falafel! On January 18, 1945, sixty thousand Auschwitz prisoners were taken to the death march. At 14 years old Dugo marched endless kilometers dreaming about round buns he will eat when he would get to Israel. Dugo survived and moved to Israel. While visiting the Machane Yehuda market in Jerusalem, he saw a falafel store, the falafel balls reminding him of the round buns which kept his spirit during the hard march. Ever since then, every January 18 Dugo eats falafel to celebrate life and as a symbol that he will never be hungry again.

The Ten Plagues
This week students in Morah Sandy's ECE3A class learned about how Pharaoh had enslaved the Jews in Mitzrayim and refused Moshe’s request to set them free, in this week's parsha. They learned that Hashem sent down the first of the 10 makkot or plagues, blood. When a Jew would drink from a cup it would be water but if an Egyptian drank from the same cup it would turn to blood. The class demonstrated this by decorating cups with red paper and pouring water into the cups making it red.
