Parsha Talk

When my brother Dr. Moshe Oberman was in high school, students were allowed to dress casually during exam time. Instead, he made it a point to dress extra nicely -- to communicate to himself how well prepared he was, down to the last detail. How does this tie in to this week's parsha? Find out in this week's Parsha Talk!

And you shall take the garments and clothe Aaron with the tunic, with the robe of the ephod, with the ephod, and with the choshen, and you shall adorn him with the band of the ephod. You shall place the cap upon his head and place the holy crown upon the cap. You shall take the anointing oil and pour [it] on his head and anoint him.And you shall bring his sons near, and you shall clothe them with tunics. And you shall gird them with sashes, Aaron and his sons, and you shall dress them with high hats, and the kehunah will be a perpetual statute for them, and you shall invest Aaron and his sons with full authority.

This week our STEAM students put their creativity to the test as they created blueprints and engineered their own castles, like the castle in Shushan . Our ECE3 and ECE4 classes conducted an experiment to see if they could grow their own crystals for Shushan's royal treasure. Our K - 2nd graders focused on the invention of the Gutenberg printing press. First they created their own scroll as part of a lesson on how stories were printed before the Gutenberg press. This will be followed up with an opportunity to create a printing press for STEAM, which the kids will use this Friday to make their own prints.
Go Texan Day

Students in early childhood and lower school came dressed for the rodeo on Friday and got to enjoy a Western style breakfast of eggs, beans, and biscuits. They were also treated to a special line dancing lesson by Ms. Bigham. Yeehaw!
Read Across America

In celebration of Dr. Seuss's birthday, students in lower school had the opportunity to read in the school lobby with lower school principal Dr. Dawn McKernan. Dr. Seuss is best known for authoring over 60 children's books. The yearly observance was inaugurated by the National Education Association.
Bracha Bee

Students in lower school participated in a Bracha Bee this week! We are so proud of all the students who demonstrated their knowledge and understanding. Students in 3rd through 5th grade were asked to name the bracha rishona (1st blessing) and bracha achrona (after blessing) of various foods, while students in Kindergarten through 2nd grade had to identify the bracha rishona. Congratulations to 1st place winners (in their categories) Sivan Melnik and Yehonatan Gilad, and runner-up winners Basya Gottlieb and Sammy Scheckter. Kol Hakavod!
Say Something

We are proud to take part in Say Something Week, an initiative designed to prevent violence in schools. Staff and Faculty filled out signs that were hung up that detailed why each can be a student's trusted adult. Students and staff took the pledge to look for warning signs, signals, and threats, to act immediately and take things seriously, and to say something to a trusted adult, all to help create a safe and healthier school.
Making a Difference

RMBA Art Students in Kindergarten through 6th Grade created original designs for the Treasures of the Texas Coast Children's Art Contest. This contest, sponsored by the Texas General Land Office, gives children the early opportunity to learn more about the Texas Coast and discover the importance of keeping it clean.
While we had to send the original works of art to the contest, we made sure to scan the children's artwork before it was mailed for the following flip books:

Secret Recipe

We were proud to participate in the 9th annual Houston Kosher Chili Cookoff which took place last Sunday at Congregation Beth Yeshurun. Thank you to our wonderful volunteers/ chili team Loren Chorn, Harry Brown, Liat Goldstein, Marisa Brown, and Missy Bernosky. Not to brag, but we certainly noticed the amount of people coming back for seconds, thirds, and even fourth helpings!

Basketball has come to an end, and we are so incredibly proud of our varsity team that took home the State Runnerup title. It was very special for our school community to spend Shabbat in Temple, TX with over 115 people there to support the team. To read a special blog post by Rabbi Barry Gelman of UOS about the weekend please click here. Stay tuned for information regarding a banner hanging ceremony.
