Special Deaccession Auction by Pook & Pook at BHC

Benefit Auction by Pook & Pook
at the Berks History Center

Enjoy a unique opportunity to bid on objects approved for deaccessioning by the board of trustees of the Berks History Center in a special on-site sale. All proceeds to benefit the museum's acquisition and conservation fund.

Auction preview starts at 11:30 a.m. 
Auction begins at 2 p.m.

"More than 100 lots to include baskets, ceramics, glass, toleware, furniture, and assorted decorative objects. Highlights include a paneled schrank; two painted dower chests; several painted brides boxes; five tall clocks including examples by Henry Hahn, Daniel Oyster, Daniel Rose, and Benjamin Witman; and a set of eight Ratskeller-type armchairs and a trestle table from the Bitting mansion in Reading. Other furniture includes several beds, parlor organs, steamer trunks, numerous Windsor and plank-seat chairs, and a Brettstuhl."

Celebrating Pennsylvania German Folk Art

Join us for a lively and informative presentation by Lisa Minardi, assistant curator at Winterthur Museum, on Pennsylvania German folk art. Enjoy lea rning about painted chests, fraktur, redware, and other colorful objects made in Berks County and the surrounding region. There will be a book sale and signing following the lecture of Ms. Minardi's recent publications, including  A Colorful Folk: Pennsylvania Germans & the Art of Everyday Life .


About Lisa Minardi:

Lisa Minardi is an assistant curator at Winterthur Museum and a Ph.D. candidate in the History of American Civilization program at the University of Delaware, where she is studying the Germans in colonial Philadelphia for her dissertation. She also serves as executive director of The Speaker's House, the historic home of Frederick Muhlenberg in Trappe, PA. A Montgomery County native and specialist in Pennsylvania German art and culture, Lisa holds a B.A. in history and museum studies from Ursinus College and an M.A. from the Winterthur Program in American Material Culture. Her exhibitions and publications include  Paint, Pattern & People: Furniture of Southeastern Pennsylvania, 1725-1850   (Winterthur, 2011);   Pastors & Patriots: The Muhlenberg Family of Pennsylvania  (Berman Museum of Art, 2011);  Drawn with Spirit: Pennsylvania German Fraktur from the Joan and Victor Johnson Collection  (Philadelphia Museum of Art, 2015); and  A Colorful Folk: Pennsylvania Germans & the Art of Everyday Life ( Winterthur, 2015).


70s Throwback: Uncle Drew at Bldg. 24

After a huge success playing at the Berks History Center's Magical History Tour 3 this summer, Uncle Drew is making a special appearance at Bldg. 24 on Saturday, January 30, 2016. Uncle Drew is a Berks County band formed in the early 1970s. This exclusive performance will open with local favorites  Steve Barth and Randy Rhoads and will  feature the original band members who came together to celebrate the history of the 60s and 70s at MHT3 this year.
