Operation Christmas Child
We will be kicking off our 2018 Operation Christmas Child ministry with "Christmas In July" this month! Look for the reappearance of the shoeboxes, change collection boxes and possibly an appearance by the "human shoebox" (a.k.a. my youngest daughter)! Start saving your extra change so we can add to our OCC budget--the more money we have, the more boxes we can pack and send.

For July, the recommended collection item is clothing. Underwear, t-shirts, socks, flip flops, shorts, dresses, etc. are all wonderful items for a child to receive. Summer clothing will be going on clearance soon, so it's a great time to pick up some warm-weather clothing items to include in your boxes.

As always, if you would like to help with our shoebox collection this year, please let me know! Collection week is November 12-19 and will be here before we know it!

United Methodist Men
The United Methodist Men will not be meeting in July and will resume their regular meeting in August on the 21st at 6:30PM at the River's Bend Grill.

We hope many of the men of the church will join us as we make plans for our next fundraiser, hopefully a spaghetti dinner in September and also to plan our activities and projects for the balance of 2018. During the summer we will continue to work on needed projects and repairs around the church - please let us know if you see things that need to be repaired. We always offer our services to give assistance to our members who need yard work done or servicing of lawn mowers - just let one of our members know and we will coordinate a time to help you.

Thank you so much for your continued support of our projects and a special thanks to those of you who are so faithful in cutting the grass at church each week. Your work is very appreciated.

We look forward to seeing you at our next meeting,
Mark Strickler, President

United Methodist Women

Thank all of you who participated in the UMW Candle Burning Program on June 25th. There was a total of $442.00 raised for mission work in the United States and around the world. We appreciate you taking the opportunity to make a contribution to honor a special person in your life or in memory of someone special to you. This is always a very meaningful program for United Methodist Women and the amount raised by our group will make quite an impact for children, youth and women in some of the most needy places in the world.

The UMW will not meet in the month of July. We will be taking a break in July but will resume our monthly meetings in August on the 20th.  Please come and join us as we discuss and plan for our many projects through the end of 2018.

Remember, all the women of the church are invited to participate in the UMW and we look forward to welcoming you at any meeting. Have a safe summer and we'll see you in church,
Doris Morefield, UMW President

Virginia United Methodist Church
Annual Conference

I had the privilege of representing Bermuda Hundred United Methodist Church at the VUMC annual conference 15-17 June in Hampton Roads.  As usual, the worship featured a blend of traditional hymns and contemporary praise and worship, and was simply awesome. This year at conference Bishop Lewis included an element of service, as over 1300 representatives went out into the Hampton Roads community cleaning up eyesores such as overgrown cemeteries and sending out prayer walkers to pray for people in the community. The conference’s representative to the Bishops’ commission on the Way Forward, Reverend Tom Berlin, made a presentation on the commission’s findings.  His presentation can be found at https://vaumc.org/pages/resources/2018-ac/2018acfridaymorning     The commission settled on three plans forward. The “One Church” plan which will remove the language of paragraph 161g which states that homosexuality is incompatible with Christian teaching, and would allow ordination and marriage of LBGLTQ individuals. However, clergy and churches would not be forced to perform marriages against their conscience. The second plan is the “Connectional Plan”, it would provide for a “Progressive” conference, a “Contextual” conference similar to the “One Church” plan, and a “Traditional” conference.  The third path forward was the “traditional plan” which would tighten discipline against those who violate the book of discipline. The UMC Bishops have unanimously endorsed the “One Church” plan. The final report from the commission will be released In July. A general conference of the World UMC will be held from Feb 23-25 2019, to determine the final path forward for the UMC. All of us have been encouraged to pray for the church from 2:23-2:25 pm every day that the general conference will be able to discern God’s will for his church going forward.

Other items of interest from the General Conference, apportionments (the amount local churches contribute to the Virginia Conference) have not increased for the eight year in a row. The annual budget for the Virginia Conference is $31 mil, of which over 50% supports the pension and medical insurance fund for the conference. Joe Plemmon’s wife Rachel was commissioned!

We voted on a resolution supporting church unity at the general conference. An amendment was made to modify it supporting the “One Church” plan but that was not approved. In the closing business, a motion was passed to send a letter to Jeff Sessions, the Attorney General expressing the Conference’s concern regarding the family separation policy.

Finally, a motion was made to encourage the general conference to consider a “graceful exit” for churches which did not agree with the final plan. Currently paragraph 2501 of the Book of Discipline requires all local church real property to be held in trust by the Virginia Conference. The motion would have encouraged the general conference to grant a gracious exit, allowing local churches to keep their real property if they in good conscience decided they no longer agreed with the path forward selected by the General Conference in Feb. I was planning on speaking in support of the measure as your representative. I do not know if BHUMC would vote to leave the Conference, however, I felt quite strongly about speaking in support of our congregation’s chief financial interest (our real property), should the church choose to leave the conference. The motion was tabled before I had a chance to speak in favor.

I would encourage everyone to pray for the general conference as we seek God’s will. Pastor Mike, myself and Joe Plemmons are available if you have additional questions about the annual conference.

In Christ, Gary Starr
